Neurotypical Disorder is a disability that many people struggle with every day. In fact, up to 98% of the people are neutotypical (NT). Sadly, the general population still has a poor understanding of what NT disorder is. Many people only know about NT disorder from characters in movies such as Dude Where’s My Car or from TV shows such as Everybody Loves Raymond. These dangerous stereotypes exclude much of the NT experience and contribute to NT disorder still being a “hidden disability”. Join your host Dr Jane Savage as she shines a light on NT disorder. She discusses the challenges NTs face at home, in the workplace and at school in the hope that NTs can be better understood and supported to live their best lives.Dr Jane is a psychologist who specialises in the treatment of NT disorder. Her groundbreaking career has spanned more than 25 years and has helped to shape much of todays discourse on neurotypicality. Jane is not NT herself but she has many NT friends and she grew up with NT family members. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone more qualified to enlighten us about the NeuroTypical experience. A note about the cover art from Dr Jane Savage:Every NeuroTypical has their own unique journey of self discovery as they work to understand their diagnoses and grow towards a place of self acceptance.A patient of mine, upon reflecting on his diagnosis of NeuroTypical disorder, once told me“There is comfort in knowing you are a normal starling, not a strange eagle. It’s impossible for a starling to be happy if it spends its life thinking it’s a failed eagle”.Eagles, like normal people, are majestic and strong. They are independent and focussed. They chose quality friendships over quantity. But NeuroTypicals are more like starlings. Starling murmurations are beautiful to see but are very poorly understood. Somehow, each individual starling instinctively knows how to move with the group, blending in easily. They seem to enjoy connecting in this way with hundreds of other starlings on a regular, sometimes daily, basis. This is why the cover art for the differeNT podcast features a starling. I hope the podcast helps all the starlings out there who are struggling to fit into a world made for eagles. Sincerely,Jane

Parenting neurotypical kids

Send us a text [https://www.buzzsprout.com/twilio/text_messages/2076680/open_sms] Parenting is a full time job. Any parent will tell you about how challenging it can be. They will also tell you about how rewarding it is and how much they love the quality time they spend with their little ones.  Sadly, the rewarding moments are few and far between for some parents whose children have additional needs and challenging behaviour.  Did you know that up to 98% of children suffer from neurotypical disorder? In todays episode we discuss the struggles that parents of NT children face and I give some advice on how to manage difficult and embarrassing situations that will inevitably and frequently arise when your child is neutotypical. It’s time we all recognise the sacrifices made by the parents of NT children. The parents are the true victims of this disease and they selflessly give up all happiness in their own lives so that they can focus on managing their children. With so much devotion from their parents, perhaps one day their NT children will be able to pretend to be normal. And that’s what truely matters.  Support the show [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2076680/support]

Making it work - Supporting NeuroTypicals in the workplace

Send us a text [https://www.buzzsprout.com/twilio/text_messages/2076680/open_sms] People who suffer from neurotypical disorder face a wide range of barriers to employment. It is estimated that in Australia right now , the unemployment rate for neurotypical individuals is as high as 4%. In this episode we talk about ways we can make our workplaces more accessible for NeuroTypicals so that we might have a future where all NeuroTypical people can contribute meaningfully to all workplaces. In this episode Dr Jane Savage mentions how artificial intelligence can help us to communicate more sensitively with our NeuroTypical colleagues.
