Mongol Invasions of Vietnam

In this episode, we explore the Mongol Empire’s 13th-century campaigns against Đại Việt and Champa, where the Trần dynasty led Vietnamese resistance through strategic retreats, resilient defense, and decisive naval ambushes. The episode highlights the three major invasions of 1258, 1285, and 1287–1288, culminating in the legendary Battle of Bạch Đằng, where metal-tipped stakes helped destroy the Mongol fleet. Although the Yuan dynasty failed to conquer the region or install a puppet ruler, the conflict ultimately produced a tributary relationship meant to preserve peace. We also look at how this era became a powerful symbol in Vietnamese historiography of national defense against foreign imperialism, while also contributing to the spread of gunpowder technology across Southeast Asia.

Shan States

In this episode, we explore the history of the Shan States, a shifting network of Tai-led principalities that shaped the highlands between modern Myanmar, China, and India from the medieval period into the twentieth century. The episode traces the rise of Möng Mao as a major regional power, the turbulence that followed the fall of Bagan, and the role of Shan alliances and rivalries in the politics of Ava and neighboring kingdoms. It also follows the transformation of these semi-independent states under British colonial rule, when hereditary rulers known as saophas were folded into the Federated Shan States and gradually lost political and financial autonomy. Finally, we look at how the abolition of feudal privileges under Burma’s military government in 1962 brought an end to centuries of aristocratic rule, marking a major turning point in Shan political history.

Mongol Invasion of Java

In this episode, we focus on the Mongol invasion of Java in 1293, a dramatic clash between the Yuan dynasty and the rising power of Majapahit. The episode explores how Kublai Khan’s expedition, originally launched to punish the Javanese ruler Kertanegara of Singhasari, became entangled in local political upheaval after Kertanegara’s overthrow. It highlights the role of Raden Wijaya, who skillfully allied with the Mongol forces to defeat his rivals before turning against them and driving them from Java. This failed invasion marked a turning point in Javanese history, helping pave the way for the rise of the Majapahit Empire and showing how Southeast Asian rulers could manipulate global imperial ambitions to serve local political goals.

Mongol Invasions of Burma

In this episode, we focus on the Mongol invasions of Burma in the late 13th century, when Kublai Khan’s Yuan dynasty challenged the powerful Pagan Empire. The episode explores how these campaigns weakened and ultimately helped bring down the Pagan Kingdom, ending centuries of dominance in central Burma. It also considers newer interpretations that question the idea of a complete Mongol occupation, emphasizing Burmese resistance, difficult terrain, and tropical conditions that limited Yuan success. In the aftermath, the rise of the Myinsaing Kingdom under three brothers marked a new center of power, while Burma entered a long period of political fragmentation and growing Tai-Shan influence.

Konbaung Dynasty

In this episode, we focus on the Konbaung dynasty, Burma’s final royal dynasty and the era of the Third Burmese Empire, founded by Alaungpaya in 1752 and brought to an end by British annexation in 1885. The episode explores how the dynasty expanded its territory, organized society through strict hierarchy and law, and shaped court life through elaborate Buddhist and Hindu rituals such as coronations and the Royal Ploughing Ceremony. It also looks at the dynasty’s attempts to modernize its army, administration, and economy, while showing why those reforms could not prevent growing foreign pressure. Ultimately, the Konbaung story reveals both the power and vulnerability of Burma’s last monarchy before colonial rule.
