Mehr Many Different Birds

Many Different Birds is a podcast that dives into Indigenous health, well-being, and the challenges of navigating the healthcare system. Through in-depth conversations, bringing together Elders, knowledge keepers, researchers, healthcare professionals, students, and community members, we amplify Indigenous voices and challenge systemic inequities. Many Different Birds goes beyond academic discussions and institutional perspectives, offering a platform for lived experiences, personal storytelling, and critical reflections. By sharing these perspectives, we hope to educate listeners, challenge preconceived notions, and contribute to meaningful change in how healthcare is understood and delivered. If you’re curious, open-minded, or just want to learn more about how we can create a just, equitable healthcare system, tune in. Let’s ask the tough questions, challenge our biases, and rethink what we think we know—together. Edited by: Lionel Seward

Episode 18: Misdiagnosis with Samaria Nancy Cardinal In this inspiring conversation, we sit down with Samaria Nancy Cardinal to explore the many ways she supports healing and transformation through her work. She opens up about her personal journey, navigating the challenges of being misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder, and the powerful process of breaking free from labels that did not define who she truly was. Her story is one of resilience, self-discovery, and reclaiming identity. We also dive into her path as a healer and entrepreneur. Samaria shares how her vision gave rise to Flowers in Wind Therapy and her work with Holistic Leaf Therapy, where she continues to guide others through holistic, culturally grounded approaches to wellness. She describes the therapeutic practices she offers her “wellness partners,” including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), narrative therapy, and Indigenous healing practices that honour culture, spirit, and community. This episode is a heartfelt exploration of the impact of mental health labels, the integration of traditional and contemporary practices, and the courage it takes to challenge stigma while embracing the full journey of mind, body, and spirit. Samaria also truly shows us that age is only a number, demonstrating that it’s never too late to heal, grow, and step into your calling. [https://feedpress.me/link/23751/17217087.gif]

Beyond Indigenization: Métis Strength and Generational Change In this episode, we speak with Sharon Goulet, a Red River Métis woman and long-time advocate for Indigenous communities in Calgary. Sharon shares her powerful journey of reconnecting with her Métis identity and passing that connection on to her daughter — a recurring and deeply moving theme throughout the conversation. We explore how cities are responding to the TRC’s Calls to Action, why the Two Row Wampum Belt remains a foundational teaching, and why simply “indigenizing” systems often misses the mark. Sharon challenges us to think about reconciliation not as a checklist, but as a deep, ongoing commitment — one that requires cultural integrity and no compromise. From motherhood to policy, personal healing to public change, Sharon reminds us of the importance of grounding the future in the strength of Indigenous voices, especially for Métis youth and the next generation. As director of the Indigenous Determinants of Health Alliance, Dr. Kelliher offers insight into creating more accessible, preventative, and culturally grounded care systems.
