Today is my mother’s birthday.
She passed away in October 2021, but this month—every year, now—I feel her more than usual. So I wanted to talk about her. About the kind of Black excellence that doesn’t make the highlight reels. About legacy, lineage, and what it means to build something that lasts.
This episode is a reflection on the women who came before us—the ones who got up early and stayed up late, who carried grief in their bodies and still showed up, who refused to disappear.
It’s also about AI, and why it matters that we step into these spaces now. Who gets to tell our stories? Who trains the tools? Who controls the narrative going forward?
And it’s about permission. To rest. To feel joy. To count survival and softness as their own kind of excellence.
