What happens when the thing you've spent years trying to hide becomes part of your strength? In this episode of The Scars, Suzi speaks to Romeo, a burns survivor who was less than a year old when a devastating accident left him with second and third-degree burns and lifelong scarring. Growing up with a visible difference, Romeo struggled with body confidence, bullying, self-acceptance and the feeling that he had to hide part of himself. Raised in a household where emotions and trauma weren't openly discussed, he carried many of those experiences into adulthood, affecting his relationships, self-esteem and sense of identity. Everything began to change when Romeo found cheerleading. What started as a university hobby became a life-changing passion, helping him discover confidence, community and a sense of belonging he had never experienced before. Alongside therapy, writing, acting and advocacy work, cheerleading helped Romeo transform his relationship with his scars and redefine what they meant to him. In this conversation, Romeo shares his journey from shame and silence to self-acceptance and purpose. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: • Growing up with burn scars and a visible difference • The long-term impact of childhood trauma • How never discussing his accident as a child impacted his feelings towards his scars • Bullying, body image and self-confidence • The challenges of navigating relationships with visible scars • Why therapy helped Romeo process years of suppressed emotions • Finding confidence through cheerleading • The importance of community and belonging • Creativity, poetry and self-expression • Living with assumptions and stereotypes • Learning to embrace your scars and define your own story ABOUT THE SCARS PODCAST The Scars Podcast shares honest conversations about living with scars, visible differences and the experiences that shape us.
