Cal grew up in Fort Collins and found his stride early through cross country, track, and trail running. He went on to compete at Appalachian State, helping lead his team to back-to-back conference titles while breaking multiple school records and running 8:42 in the steeplechase at Penn Relays. Now back in Fort Collins, Cal is building momentum in the marathon and trail scene, recently running 2:19 at the Chicago Marathon in his debut. He has big goals that include qualifying for the 2028 Olympic Trials. We talk about his journey from team-centered racing to longer distances, what’s fueling his recent success, and the experiences that continue to shape his love for running. Get to know Jacob Hatcher, a Tennessee native who discovered his love for running through cross country and track in high school after hanging up the basket shoes. He went on to compete at Lee University. where he became an NCAA DII All-American. He has run personal bests of 4:04 for the mile, 3:44 for 1500m, and 64:54 for the half marathon, winning his debut at the Tucson Half Marathon. We talk about his move to Fort Collins with his wife Marie, his favorite workouts and racing distances, the running community that keeps him motivated, and some of the moments that have shaped his journey in the sport. 69. Carson Hume- FRE Athlete Spotlight

On today's episode of Conversation Pace with FRE we are getting to know Carson Hume. Carson is originally from Lakewood, CO and moved to Fort Collins in 2014 to compete for Colorado State University . While at CSU he ran personal bests of 13:58 for and 29:23 for 5k and 10k and was a scoring member on two top 10 team finishes at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. After a year away from serious running Carson decided to run a solo marathon in 2020 which re-lit the spark for training and racing. Since then he has competed in road, trail and cross country races, highlighted by a 3rd place finish at the 2023 Boulderthon Half Marathon and a 5th place finish in 1:08:51 at the 2024 Horsetooth Half Marathon. In 2025 Carson underwent double Haglund’s surgery to fix some long persisting Achilles problems and is looking forward to training and racing pain free in 2026.
