EP 34 More Than Translation: Language, Identity, and What Gets Lost Without a Human Voice

Language has always been more than words. It carries emotion, culture, context, and sometimes the difference between being truly heard and being left behind. In this episode, Arlene and Valerie sit down with Laura Valdez, founder of Valdez Language Services and a Latina entrepreneur with 16 years of experience in translation and interpretation services. What unfolds is a conversation about so much more than business — it's about what it means to grow up as the bridge between two worlds, what gets missed when AI steps in, and why language access is a human rights issue. Laura grew up in New York City as the child of Colombian and Pakistani immigrants, navigating between languages at the kitchen table long before she ever became a professional interpreter. That early experience of being the family's bridge, of watching her mom lose a court case because she lacked an interpreter, of helping her stepdad navigate a country that wasn't built for him — all of it planted a seed that became Valdez Language Services. Today, her agency provides professional interpretation services in over 20 languages across Southern California and beyond, supporting conferences, nonprofits, legal proceedings, healthcare settings, and more. Arlene shares her own real moment of language helplessness — trying to handle a call from Mexico about her dual citizenship with nothing but an iPhone translator — and the conversation opens into something deeper about second-generation Latina identity, the grief of losing a language that was never fully passed down, and the quiet longing to reclaim it. If you've ever navigated that in-between space of cultural identity and language, this one is going to resonate. The three also get into the AI question honestly — because yes, AI translation tools exist, and yes, they're getting more advanced. But as Laura explains, the nuance, the cultural context, the emotional intelligence that a skilled human interpreter brings to a delicate legal or medical moment? That's something a machine simply cannot replicate. There are 10 different ways to say "straw" in Spanish. An algorithm doesn't know which one you mean. And because this show always makes room for joy — Laura shares the project she's currently building: a Learn Spanish with Bad Bunny course that teaches language through music in a group immersive setting. Yes, it's rated R. Yes, Arlene is already signed up. What this episode explores: * The difference between translation services and interpretation services, and when organizations need each * Growing up as a child language interpreter in an immigrant family * Why AI cannot replace human linguists, especially in legal and medical settings * Language access as an act of belonging, advocacy, and community care * How organizations can move from performative diversity to real inclusion through multilingual services * Learning Spanish through music (and why Bad Bunny might be the best teacher) * The second-generation experience of cultural identity and language loss Connect with Laura Valdez: Website: https://vlanguageservices.com/ [https://vlanguageservices.com/] Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/valdes_language_services/ [https://www.instagram.com/valdes_language_services/] LinkedIn: Laura Valdez (V-A-L-D-E-S) If this episode spoke to you, share it with someone who needs to hear it — and leave us a review on Spotify or Apple Podcasts. episode EP 33 Why You're So Drawn to Certain People: Human Design Composite Charts & Relationship Dynamics cover

EP 33 Why You're So Drawn to Certain People: Human Design Composite Charts & Relationship Dynamics

Have you ever felt inexplicably lit up around a certain person, like you just plug in and everything brightens? Or maybe you've been in a relationship that felt like constantly climbing a mountain with no clear summit in sight? In this episode of Espiritu Coffee Chats, Arlene breaks down one of the most advanced and eye-opening layers of Human Design: composite charts, also called relationship charts. This is what happens when two people's charts are laid on top of each other, and what gets revealed is not just chemistry. It's design. Arlene walks through the four main types of channel activations that show up in Human Design relationship readings: electromagnetics, compromise, dominance, and companionship. Each one tells a different story about how two people's energy fields interact, where there's natural ease, where there's tension, and where one person is simply built to lead in a specific area of life. From romantic partnerships to co-parenting to business collaborations, this framework applies to every significant relationship you have. This episode is a real-time learning experience. Valerie is going through Arlene's Human Design certification program, so she's hearing a lot of this for the first time, and her questions and lightbulb moments make the episode feel exactly like what it is: two friends figuring something meaningful out together over coffee. Whether you're trying to understand a relationship that ended but still lingers, a partnership that feels effortless in some areas and contentious in others, or just want to know why certain people activate something in you that others don't, this conversation is your introduction to one of the most useful tools Human Design offers. Topics covered include how composite charts work and what they actually reveal, the electromagnetic channel and why certain people light you up, compromise channels and what tension in relationships is actually telling you, dominance channels and how to stop fighting for energy that isn't yours to hold, companionship channels and the gift of deep relational ease, how Human Design can reframe relationships that ended without making them feel like failures, using Human Design for business partnerships and co-parenting, and how to begin pulling two charts together to see your real relational dynamics. Key Takeaways * Electromagnetics are the pull you feel toward someone who has the gate you're missing. When you're together, you become a complete channel, which is exactly why certain people feel like they light you up from the inside. * Compromise channels reveal where two people are both wired to lead in the same area, and understanding this can replace resentment with a real conversation about who gets to hold what energy. * Dominance channels aren't about control. They're about natural authority in a specific domain, and recognizing them means you stop fighting to compete in places that were never yours to dominate. * Companionship channels are the quiet foundation of relationships that last. They don't activate as intensely, but they hold. * Every relationship, including the ones that ended, activated something in you that needed activating. Human Design gives you the language to honor that without needing a different ending to the story. Want to go deeper in person? Arlene is hosting a Human Design Immersion Retreat June 19 through 21 in Del Mar, California, right on the Summer Solstice. Workshops will include relationship composite charts, sex and love gates, abundance and money gates, breathwork, sound healing, and Ayurvedic meals. Day passes are available. EP 32 Rest Is Not Lazy: Healing Your Relationship With Rest

Most of us say we want rest. But when it finally arrives, the guilt shows up with it. The to-do list surfaces. The body sits still while the mind keeps running. In this episode, Arlene and Valerie get honest about something that does not get talked about enough: the issue is often not that we do not have rest. It is that we do not know how to receive it. They trace this back to where it started — generational modeling, families in constant motion, the conditioning that productivity is worth and stillness is laziness. They talk about what rest actually looks like beyond sleep, why nature is genuinely restorative, and how younger generations might be showing us something important about the art of doing nothing. Arlene shares two grounded rituals that have helped her build real rest into her life: honoring her menstrual cycle as a natural prompt to slow down, and returning to yoni steaming as a practice that forces a true pause. This one is short. But it holds something worth sitting with — especially if you are a woman in business who has been running on fumes and calling it fine. Topics: healing your relationship with rest, rest and burnout, women entrepreneurs and rest, generational patterns, cyclical living, Ayurveda, nervous system, yoni steaming, rest without guilt, Latina wellness, holistic rest practices, rest is not lazy 📢 Join the conversation! episode EP 31 Fear Gates in Human Design: Understanding the Splenic Center and Your Intuition cover

EP 31 Fear Gates in Human Design: Understanding the Splenic Center and Your Intuition

There are fears you've carried for so long that they've started to feel like personality traits. The fear of failing before you even begin. The fear of the future you can't control. The fear of endings and all the grief that comes with letting something go. In this episode, Arlene and Valerie pull back the curtain on one of the most misunderstood centers in Human Design — the Splenic Center — and reveal something that might just reframe the way you understand every fear you've ever had. What This Episode Explores The Splenic Center is one of the oldest energy centers in Human Design. It lives in the body as survival instinct, in the nervous system as fight or flight, and in the quiet moment before you make a decision as that whisper you either listen to or talk yourself out of. Arlene and Valerie break down what it means to have a defined versus undefined spleen, why that distinction matters for your health, your decisions, and how you process the fears of everyone around you, and then walk through each of the seven fear gates one by one. Gate 57, the fear of the future and the seat of clairvoyant intuition. Gate 44, the fear of the past and the gift of reading people with uncanny precision. Gate 50, the fear of responsibility that Valerie knows deeply as a Latina entrepreneur building something for her family and her community. Gate 32, the fear of failure and its highest expression as the instinct for long-term success. Gate 28, the fear of endings, of cycles, of the death-and-rebirth rhythm that life keeps asking us to trust. Gate 48, the fear of inadequacy that keeps so many brilliant people in analysis paralysis, endlessly editing what already has value. And Gate 18, the fear of authority and the fire it takes to speak up for the people when the room goes quiet. Arlene also shares something deeply personal about her own channels, Gate 57 and Gate 44, and how the intuition woven into her Human Design showed up in one of the most painful seasons of her life — losing her daughter to SIDS and learning to trust her body's knowing even when she didn't have answers. Why This Matters If you've ever made a decision out of fear and only realized it later, this episode is for you. If you've ever pushed yourself to move forward on something that your body kept quietly saying no to, or stayed somewhere long past when it stopped being right because you were afraid of what would come next, this conversation gives you something real to work with. Understanding your fear gates isn't about eliminating fear. It's about recognizing when fear is your teacher and when it's just noise you absorbed from someone else's channel. And in a time when there's plenty of fear to go around, knowing the difference matters. Key Themes and Takeaways * The Splenic Center is your body's oldest intelligence, rooted in survival instinct and deeply connected to your immune system, your lymphatic health, and your intuition * Whether your spleen is defined, undefined, or open, you are being affected by fear frequencies; the difference is whether they originate within you or whether you're absorbing them from your environment * Each of the seven fear gates carries a specific theme, and when understood, those fears become doorways into your highest expression rather than walls that keep you stuck * Making decisions from a fear state is different from making decisions informed by intuition; your authority in Human Design helps you tell them apart * If you have an undefined or open spleen, giving yourself space away from collective fear, whether that's news, social media, or draining environments, isn't optional; it's a practice of returning to yourself Grab Your Human Design Chart Pull up your free chart and see which fear gates are active in your Splenic Center. EP 30 Being a Latina Entrepreneur in 2026: Navigating Fear, DEI Rollbacks, and Building Business During Political Uncertainty

Some conversations don't have a tidy ending, and this is one of them. Arlene and Valerie sit down for one of their most honest episodes yet, naming what it actually feels like to be a Latina entrepreneur in the US right now, when political pressure is heavy, DEI funding is disappearing, and most of us are trying to build something meaningful while carrying all of it in the background. They move from the emotional to the practical. Grief, ancestral fear, the tightness in the chest that comes from watching the news. And then: how to protect your business, own your audience, use your voice, and keep building without shrinking. This episode won't give you a resolution, but it will remind you that you are not alone in what you are feeling. Key themes: the DEI rollback and what it means for communities of color, building an email list and platform you own, using your authenticity as a business tool, collective grief and how it lives in the body, and why community matters more than ever in this season. En fantastisk app med et enormt stort udvalg af spændende podcasts. Podimo formår virkelig at lave godt indhold, der takler de lidt mere svære emner. At der så også er lydbøger oveni til en billig pris, gør at det er blevet min favorit app.
