episode Make A Difference Minute: George Mills' Toast to the Flag cover

Beskrivelse

On this Make A Difference Minute, I’m honored to share a special recording from my friend, the late Sgt. George Mills, a World War II veteran, former prisoner of war, and a man who dedicated his life to serving others. Captured during the Battle of the Bulge and later liberated in 1945, Sgt. Mills understood sacrifice in ways few ever will. For years, he shared something he called “Toast to the Flag.” More than a presentation, it was a heartfelt reflection on the meaning behind the red, white, and blue and the freedoms represented by the American flag. When Sgt. George Mills spoke about patriotism, sacrifice, and this country, he spoke from experience. His words carried the weight of someone who lived through war, endured hardship, and never stopped believing in service to others. I’m thankful to call Sgt. Mills my friend and honored to share his legacy with you on this Memorial Day. This MADM is brought to you by Bama Estate Planning by Attorney Harlan D. episode Carrying the Torch: Hope Beyond Grief cover

Carrying the Torch: Hope Beyond Grief

Tonight on The Mark White Show, I'm joined by Fran Birdwell for a deeply personal conversation about grief, hope, and learning how to live with both. Fran has been living with stage IV colon cancer and has endured the unimaginable loss of two sons. Through profound heartbreak, she has discovered that grief is not something we simply get over. It’s something we carry. It’s not easy. In fact, it can be very, very difficult. But we carry the torch for those who no longer can, not smoldering in sorrow, but shining brightly with love, purpose, and remembrance. Fran shares a powerful “pebble of grief” perspective and reminds us that even the smallest victories in the midst of loss are still victories worth celebrating. Real stories. Real people. Make A Difference Minute: Greatness of Heart

On this Make a Difference Minute, I reflect on a word we don’t hear very often, but perhaps need more than ever: magnanimous. It means having a greatness of heart. It describes people who are generous in spirit, gracious in disagreement, and unwilling to let bitterness or resentment define them. Being magnanimous doesn’t mean ignoring wrong or pretending hurt doesn’t exist. It means choosing dignity over revenge, character over pettiness, and kindness over cruelty. In a world that often rewards outrage and division, greatness of heart is a quiet strength. It’s the ability to rise above, to forgive, and to treat others with respect even when it’s difficult. Sometimes, making a difference begins with the way we respond when we’ve been wronged. episode Make A Difference Minute: A Friend Remembered cover

Make A Difference Minute: A Friend Remembered

On this Make A Difference Minute, I’m remembering my friend, Chad Collins. Chad and I grew up together around Sanders Street and Second Avenue in Athens, Alabama. As the years passed, life took us in different directions, but the memories and friendship remained. Over the last several weeks, many people followed Chad’s battle with pancreatic cancer. Through it all, one thing remained constant, Chad asked for prayers. He was humble by nature and never wanted to be a burden. Even when friends rallied around him and organized support for his family, Chad admitted he probably would have said no if they had asked first. That’s just who Chad was. Although his fight was much shorter than anyone hoped, the outpouring of love from family, friends, and the community was a powerful reminder that we aren’t meant to carry life’s burdens alone. Tonight, I’m remembering a childhood friend, and I pray for his wife, Crystal, his son, Carson, and all who loved him. I’m grateful for the memories we shared and for the example Chad set. Sometimes, a person’s greatest legacy isn’t found in titles or accomplishments. It’s found in the lives they touched and the love they inspired in others.
