This Seems Personal
We love to call it laziness, or a willpower problem. But self-sabotage usually shows up sounding completely reasonable — "I'm not ready," "I just have a few more things to do first," "I'm not really qualified." It's not that you don't want the thing. It's that some part of you is working overtime to keep you safe from it. In this episode I break down the two fears underneath almost all of it — the fear of being found out, and the fear of success itself — and why your brain treats hitting submit like walking into a burning building. I tell you about the contest I never entered (and the all-expenses-paid trip to Vegas I lost on purpose), the years I spent quitting jobs right before I'd have to sustain them, and what psychologists call self-handicapping. This isn't a pep talk. I'm not going to tell you to just do it. We're going to talk about what's actually in the way — because you can't run into the fire. You have to put it out first.
