Arif Abdul Hussain is a British Islamic scholar, educator, and the founding director of the Al-Mahdi Institute in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Since establishing the institute in 1993, he has led its growth into an internationally respected center for advanced Islamic studies. His work emphasizes combining classical learning with contemporary intellectual inquiry, enabling students to critically engage with both heritage and modernity. He began his formal Islamic education at the Madrassah Syed al-Khoei in London, where he graduated with honours in 1988. He then continued his studies in Qom, Iran, between 1989 and 1993. There, he focused on classical texts in logic, jurisprudence (fiqh), and legal theory (usul al-fiqh), studying under some of the most distinguished teachers of the Hawzah. During his time in Qom, he also began teaching these subjects to junior students. Upon returning to the UK, he founded the Al-Mahdi Institute to address the need for contextual Islamic scholarship in the West. At the institute, he teaches Islamic philosophy, Qur’anic sciences, theology, and hadith methodology at a graduate level. His courses are known for encouraging critical thinking, ethical reflection, and interfaith engagement. Beyond the classroom, Arif Abdul Hussain is a public speaker and thought leader. He frequently lectures on the human dimensions of Islamic belief, the relevance of religion in modern life, and the importance of ethical spirituality. His work continues to influence both students of knowledge and broader audiences seeking meaningful, principled understanding of Islam in today’s world.
