Following the great defeat, the Shadow was thought diminished beyond recall, its power scattered, and its voice silenced. The dominion of Men expanded in its absence, and the memory of terror grew distant, softened by time and triumph. But in broken places and forgotten lands, a will endured, patient and unyielding. Part III tells of the endurance of malice, a spirit that would not fade. The servant returns to the master, and begins the first movements toward a darker design.
