Chopwell, a former mining village in Gateshead, was known for its strong left-wing politics. In 1925, miners were locked out by the owners for rejecting lower pay and worse conditions. This began a 17-month struggle marked by community solidarity: Soup kitchens and aid, including from Russia, kept them going. This podcast, co-produced by Digital Voice with Chopwell Community Centre and funded by The Heritage Lottery Fund, marks the centenary of the lockout. It shares first-hand accounts of the fight for workers’ rights and the enduring spirit of social justice. With thanks to Beamish
