Rotating the plane with Stijn van Aardenne

For this episode of Making with Machines Jori travels to Rotterdam to meet Stijn van Aardenne. During Covid, Stijn started building his own, large format, 3D printer. Over the years, he has upgraded it with a pallet extruder and a rotating buildplate. The objects that can be made with this unique printing approach have come to define the design language of the Stijn's work. The lamps he makes are informed by what the machine can do, and more importantly, by what it cannot do, yet. During the conversation we discuss the motivation behind Stijn's work, his design process and what it's like to run a small business selling 3D printed design lamps. Whether you already know Stijn's work or you're discovering it just know you will learn more about the man behind the machine and the machine that he built. Open hardware design with Jens Dyvik

In the fourth episode of Making with Machines we discuss open hardware design with Jens Dyvik. Jens is an independent designer and FabLab founder based in Oslo, Norway. In the conversation we discuss the process of making open hardware design and what difficulties might arise, what it takes to open your own FabLab, and the three levels of using digital fabrication machines. Jens studied design at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. He did an internship at the then newly opened WAAG FabLab in Amsterdam which inspired him to go on a two year world tour visiting FabLabs all around the globe. After his travels, Jens settled in Oslo where he co-founded the Fellesverkstedet FabLab and started working as an Independent Designer developing recipes for open hardware machines. If you're interested in learning more about Jens's work, listen to this latest episode of Making with Machines. Digital Embroidery with Bruna Goveia Da Rocha

Bruna Goveia Da Rocha is an assistant professor at the Eindhoven University of Technology and an expert in digital embroidery. She has played a big part in both our studies, where we individually collaborated with her on several occasions. Bruna finished her studies in product design at Universidade Positivo in 2012 and continued with the masters in industrial design at the Eindhoven University of Technology. It was there that she encountered digital embroidery in the wearable senses lab and it has been her machine of choice ever since. She finished her PhD on the topic of sample making in digital craftsmanship in 2023, where she developed an understanding of how we make design, and highlighted the intrinsic value of prototypes and samples as contributions themselves.  In this episode, we dive into the specifics of digital embroidery and try to unpack the role of making in her practice. One of her staple publications on samples: 10.1145/3532106.3533516 [https://doi.org/10.1145/3532106.3533516]

Interactive fabrication with Max Alberts

Our first guest episode stars Max Alberts, a designer with an interesting background and a cool project to tell us about! Max started his education in orthopedic technology, where he had his first encounters with 3D printing as a tool. Picking it up as a hobby, he continued to investigate the role that 3D printing could have in his practice. However, when he started his Master's in Industrial Design at the Eindhoven University of Technology, he started to regard the machine as a way to make creative things. During his graduation project, he made a 3D printer that allowed live modification of G-code, facilitating more open-ended exploration with texture and structure. The outcomes are not predetermined, and looking at the machine and material inspires different explorations. Now he is teaching at Orthopedic Technology, where he is curious how he will interweave his design thinking into the education. Curious about Max and or his project? Please have a listen to our new episode! The project about drizzling honey: https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3656156.3665434 [https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3656156.3665434].

What is Making with Machines?

In this first episode of Making with Machines, Jori and Maas, two makers who work with machines discuss their motivation for making a podcast and talk about some of their own experiences making with machines, 3D printers mostly. Maas is a graduate student at the Eindhoven University of Technology who likes tinkering with 3D printers to explore in what other creative ways they can be used. Jori also likes tinkering with 3D printers, especially when robotic arms are involved, he recently started as a freelance 3D print engineer after having worked at a 3D concrete printing startup. Together they are on a mission to explore how digital fabrication technology can be used in creative and artistic ways. Always asking the question “What else can it do?” Join them on this journey through the world of creative digital fabrication.
