Already Goethe was fascinated by opposites: in his theory of colours, he contrasts light and darkness, and in Faust he builds on the idea of an inherent human striving that is, by nature, ultimately limited. However, he never regarded these insights as negative. On the contrary, he was deeply intrigued by the idea that opposites generate and complement one another.
