No Longer “Suffering in Silence”

Hey guys, welcome back to another episode of The Black Compass! This week, we discussed a topic near and dear to us. Black women have to carry so much mental, emotional, and physical burdens that it can often be overwhelming. The stereotypes attached to black women are often unwarranted and mentally tax us in ways that can cause long-lasting damage. Being able to find support and safe spaces to allow us to emotionally heal and grow are difficult and can be hard to find. This week, we focus on how to find and create these spaces in our lives so we won’t have our voices silenced. It is important to cultivate trusted relationships we can look to in order to be heard and valued.   Episode Highlights * Stereotype of “having it all together” * Finding support and safe spaces * Fighting “suffering in silence” stigma * Making your voice heard * Importance of building trust   Resources: Dr. Jess’ website: https://drjesswilliams.com/ [https://drjesswilliams.com/]  Dr. Jess’ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ucdrjess/ [https://www.instagram.com/ucdrjess/]  Dynasti’s Website: https://www.dynastihunt.com/ [https://www.dynastihunt.com/]  Dynasti’s Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dynastihunt/ [https://www.instagram.com/dynastihunt/]

Navigating the New Normal

Hey guys! Happy Happy New Year! We are back and better than ever. One thing about 2021, many things have changed and created a “new normal” and simply won’t allow us to return to our pre-pandemic lives. Something that stands out is the workplace, with more and more companies and employers going remote permanently even as the world slowly opens back up. Thus, our workspaces have changed and we are dealing with the aftereffects of that. Working from home has really changed people's attitudes and expectations towards work. This week on The Black Compass, we examine the new workplace culture and how to manage certain burdens that we now have to deal with working remotely. We have to prioritize ourselves and create boundaries that will help us practice healthy work/life balances.    Episode Highlights: * Managing inflated workplace expectations  * Creating work from home boundaries  * Examining workplace culture in a WFH climate * Coping with mental health during the pandemic * How to handle workplace burden placed on African American women * Using your voice in the workplace to demand change Resources: Dr. Jess’ website: https://drjesswilliams.com/ [https://drjesswilliams.com/]  Dr. Jess’ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ucdrjess/ [https://www.instagram.com/ucdrjess/]  Dynasti’s Website: https://www.dynastihunt.com/ [https://www.dynastihunt.com/]  Dynasti’s Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dynastihunt/ [https://www.instagram.com/dynastihunt/]

When You Are Able to Know Your Limitations

It’s the “Fourth Quarter” Woo sah! It’s been a long year for everyone. We. Are. Tired. As the year comes to a close, we fight the grind and try to push through and finish the year strong. But while you make that last push, make sure you take care of yourself and do not push yourself too far. Hosts Dr. Jess and Dynasty are here to help you wind down and remind us to be kind to ourselves.   In this episode, we discuss how we set limitations in our professional and personal lives. We explore the idea of being okay with not juggling everything and allowing some things to be removed from our daily to-do list!      “And whether your expectations of me have fallen short or not, I can't carry those for you. I have to be able to say these are my limits.”   “You have to set boundaries, you have to be able to identify your limitations, and it's okay to let the plate drop and break for your own sanity.” Episode Highlights: * Knowing Your Limitations: [0:24] * Burnout!: [7:00] * Personal Audits: [10:14] * 4 P’s: [16:32]   Resources Mentioned: Dr. Jess’ website: https://drjesswilliams.com/ [https://drjesswilliams.com/]  Dr. Jess’ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ucdrjess/ [https://www.instagram.com/ucdrjess/]  Dynasti’s Website: https://www.dynastihunt.com/ [https://www.dynastihunt.com/]  Dynasti’s Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dynastihunt/ [https://www.instagram.com/dynastihunt/]

Black Women In The Political System

Did you know that Black Women have the power to carry elections? We certainly do and 2020 is the year that will push the Black Woman’s vote like never before. Today, we are going deep into the discussion around Black Women and America’s political system, from the insurmountable amount of scrutiny that Black Women in politics receive to the harmful impact of uninformed voting.   In this episode, we also discuss how Black Women have historically carried the vote of so many elections, the importance of voter education, and why we have a deep-rooted responsibility to show up and make our votes count - plus so much more.   Even though this episode is being released post-election, we still thought it was fitting to recognize and call out the significant burden that is put on black women in politics and during elections.      “My vote counts so much more. Because I know that we can sway elections, I've seen us do it. I've seen Black Women do it. And that if I don't go and you don't vote, and all of our girls don't vote, we're in trouble.” - [7:29]   “Like anything else - learning about math and science - voting is a subject. It’s history. It's politics, right? And I think once again, as a race when it comes down to voting, it's like a black sheep topic.” - [8:28]   “I think with all the racial injustices that have occurred and the whole thing with COVID - this whirlwind of 2020 is really going to push our race to vote.” - [10:29] Episode Highlights: How Black Women are treated in the political system [1:13] Why Black Women have the responsibility of carrying the election [7:29] How 2020 will push the Black Women’s vote [10:29] Why voters education is a privilege [15:00] Taking time for self-care during and after the election [17:02]
