This article is from 2023 and it’s even more obvious now. Your support is greatly appreciated! Thanks for your support: 30% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/b66e5c2e] 💙 40% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/01f1b0e8] 💙 50% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/0d3e6643] 💙 60% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/6a8f4788] A few years ago, I got news that a friend of mine, who was known for his partying, had given up drinking. Upon hearing this, it surprised me that of all the emotions I felt, I recall the distinct stab of jealousy. “Why do I feel jealous?” I wondered. If I was living the life I wanted to live, why should I feel envious of a friend who had chosen sobriety? But before I could make further progress, the familiar justifications for drinking rose up to divert me from the path of healthy self-reflection. “I need to be able to wind down in the evenings. I need a break every now and then. Drinking is a part of social settings. It’s just a few beers. I can quit whenever I want.” My internal dialogue became increasingly hostile, as if I was mad at myself for even considering there was anything I needed to change. I found myself asking why the idea of a self-evaluation provoked feelings of denial and anger? What was the mechanism at work that kept me off the path to progress and condemned me to a toxic lifestyle? More importantly, how was it possible to escape this mechanism? I did quit drinking eventually, and my life is better for it. This experience allowed me to recognize how a similar mechanism of self-deception appears whenever there is a social dialogue on the subject of racism. Racism apologists are intoxicated with their perception of our country. They deflect from any mention of racial inequality. Eventually, they become angered that you ever brought it up. The question before us now is how to stage a productive intervention that will help our society develop a true commitment to racial equality. Intoxication on racism My justifications for drinking had become a part of my personal identity. I couldn’t even ask myself whether or not I wanted to keep drinking. There was a mechanism within my thought process that compelled me to sidestep the conversation in favor of maintaining toxic behaviors. I wanted the intoxication, so I adjusted my perception of reality to justify my behavior. My feeling of jealousy was the breakthrough I needed. It helped me realize that there was a form of happiness I desired that drinking prevented me from achieving. This personal experience helped me better understand America’s intoxication with racial inequality. From its inception, the United States has failed to live up to its noble aspirations. Our cultural identity is that this is a nation of freedom, although Black people have always been denied equal freedoms. It’s intoxicating to get lost in the noble aspirations of our mythologized history. It’s sobering to recognize the many ways we’ve betrayed those aspirations. The critical element is to recognize our cultural identity must be based on achieving our stated goals for everyone, not on perpetuating the false mythology that insists our work is already done. Thanks for your support: 30% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/b66e5c2e] 💙 40% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/01f1b0e8] 💙 50% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/0d3e6643] 💙 60% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/6a8f4788] Racism and denial of its existence are major components of American cultural identity Conversations about racism in the United States are frequently derailed by the argument that any responsible action to combat injustice will encroach upon our positive sense of national identity. The truth is, adopting a sober perspective on racism is the only way all Americans will ever have access to an unobstructed pursuit of happiness. Discussing racism in America is similar to staging an intervention with a problem drinker. Racism apologists, like problem drinkers, don’t want to listen. Instead, they immediately deflect from the issue or come up with arguments to justify their behavior. * “Our country isn’t racist.” * “Why do you have to bring race into everything?” * “When you discuss racism, you’re dividing the country.” * “Discussing America’s true racial history in schools makes white kids feel uncomfortable.” * “Our Founding Fathers owned slaves, but we can’t judge the past by the morals of today.” * “Slaves learned things that benefited them later in life.” These arguments are designed to preserve a form of nationalistic intoxication, but they all quickly disintegrate under examination. “Fundamentally American” ideas that perpetuate racism The sanitized, positive mythology that we’re trained to believe about the United States only acknowledges the existence of the nation’s most noble ideals. Masses of people are conditioned to believe that America is “the land of opportunity,” that we can “boast of tremendous achievements” in our history, and that our nation is “rooted in fairness and equality.” However, it’s not hard to point to any number of examples of how our country has failed to live up to its promises. Wealth inequality Americans are fixated on the dream of acquiring an obscene amount of individual wealth for themselves. They’re so intoxicated by the promise of this idea that they resort to hostility and denial when confronted with the truth of American wealth inequality. In order to maintain the mythologized perception of America as the “land of opportunity,” it’s necessary to disregard the history of exploited labor. To this day many families [https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/mcconnell-s-family-shows-legacy-slavery-persists-most-american-lives-n1028031] that can trace their generational wealth back to the plantation era. Exploitation did not end with the Civil War. There are countless examples of Black people getting run off their land [https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/how-southern-black-farmers-were-forced-from-their-land-and-their-heritage], or who were denied the benefits [https://www.history.com/news/gi-bill-black-wwii-veterans-benefits] they had rightfully earned. The result of hundreds of years of discrimination is an unfair and deliberately created racial wealth gap [https://www.americanprogress.org/article/eliminating-black-white-wealth-gap-generational-challenge/] between Black and white people which has to be addressed if our nation is ever going to truly represent anything it claims to stand for. Selective interpretation of historyAmericans tend to look at their history through rose-colored glasses. There are people who insist that “all lives matter,” but then they demand a school curriculum that disregards the experience of enslaved Black people. Today, a debate rages on over whether teaching the truth about American history will make white students “feel uncomfortable [https://hechingerreport.org/opinion-why-the-narrative-that-critical-race-theory-makes-white-kids-feel-guilty-is-a-lie/].” It shouldn’t be controversial to say our national identity would be better off rooted in fact instead of fantasy. Censoring the truth about the history of American authoritarianism, the institution of slavery, Reconstruction, the Jim Crow era, etc., leaves the population vulnerable to exploitation through the use of the same tactics. We can’t allow ourselves to disregard factual history because the truth dismantles the unjust pride we feel in our national identity. A more responsible philosophy is to work to deliver on our country’s promises. That can only be achieved through acknowledging where we failed. Compliance through forceAnother aspect of the fundamental American ideology is the notion we can solve every problem with force. Growing up, if my dad couldn’t make something work, he’d hit it. Often, this resulted in irreparable damage to whatever he was working on. The US military is the most excessively funded [https://www.pgpf.org/blog/2023/04/the-united-states-spends-more-on-defense-than-the-next-10-countries-combined] military in the world. The US police force ranks as the world’s third-largest [https://boingboing.net/2021/04/20/u-s-policing-budgets-would-rank-as-the-worlds-third-highest-military-expenditure.html#:~:text=$118bn%20was%20spent%20funding,official%20armed%20forces%20and%20China%27s.] military. We put too much faith in the concept of force and I wonder if this compulsion is a result of the hostility stage that seems to arise in response to the subject of institutionalized racism. The Black community is disproportionally [https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/report-black-people-are-still-killed-police-higher-rate-groups-rcna17169] targeted by the police and subjected to higher rates of incarceration [https://www.sentencingproject.org/reports/the-color-of-justice-racial-and-ethnic-disparity-in-state-prisons-the-sentencing-project/] than the white community. One of the most important censored lessons of history is how modern US police forces grew out of the plantation era’s slave patrols [https://naacp.org/find-resources/history-explained/origins-modern-day-policing]. These facts represent human rights violations that undermine any argument of a commitment to “fairness.” Thanks for your support: 30% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/b66e5c2e] 💙 40% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/01f1b0e8] 💙 50% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/0d3e6643] 💙 60% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/6a8f4788] Racism is not a condition for American happiness I gave up drinking not because of an intervention but due to a personal revelation. In this, as in many things, healing required a leap of faith. I discovered that alcohol deceives you into giving up control over many aspects of your life. It determines your activities. It chooses your friends. It influences how you behave in public. It becomes difficult to give up alcohol because alcohol represents everything that’s familiar. I held on to alcohol for too long because I allowed it to become part of my identity. It was difficult to think of quitting because I didn’t know what the future would look like without it. What would I do? What would I say? What about my relationships with my friends? So, I simply maintained the status quo with statements like, “It’s just a harmless drink.” The truth is, this was an excuse to distract from a reality I was too scared to confront. Alcohol is not harmless, it’s toxic. It’s not bringing you happiness, it’s the source of your depression. Many Americans have similarly conditioned themselves to dismiss the toxic influence of racial inequality because they’re intoxicated by an illusion of national identity. “It’s just a harmless comment,” they say. But the truth is that any example of racist behavior or ideology has a devastating ripple effect on our whole society. Just like one drink leads to another, one act of hate leads to another. Racism determines where we spend our national resources, it selects our allies, it corrupts our sense of justice. When we fail to confront it, we’re submitting to fear and ignorance. It’s time we recognized that the pursuit of happiness is only available to anyone if we all work to ensure the path is unobstructed for everyone. The United States of America needs an intervention Addicts are very skilled at self-deception and they take advantage of the rules of polite conversation to make sure no progress is possible. They’ll agree with you and smile to your face even though they have no intention of changing their behavior. With regard to American society, I feel there’s value in using the model of addiction intervention to inform how we approach conversations about racism. Too often in polite conversation, people are allowed to persist in personal illusions while shifting attention away from practical solutions. The tools you learn through having an intervention with an addict can be useful in this sort of interaction. It’s often called a “come-to-Jesus moment.” American society could use one. I had a personal epiphany when a moment of jealousy compelled me to reevaluate certain beliefs I’d conditioned myself never to question. This reevaluation allowed me to give up drinking. With regard to American racial inequity, a large percentage of our population has become convinced that the only way to experience the high of national pride is to disregard all the evidence of racial inequity. This creates an unfair burden on the Black community and America cannot fulfill its promise until this burden is addressed. There’s another way to feel satisfaction with our country. That way lies in working to actually make our most noble aspirations a reality. For too long, we’ve been caught in the shiny flash of a lure that compels us to labor for the promise of a deferred reward. The shiny flash is the deluding lie. We need to focus on making sure everyone, particularly the Black community, receives their promised reward. Consider what you sacrifice through a passive tolerance of institutionalized racism. What price are you forced to pay when you live in a country where injustice has been normalized? To what extent are you robbing your children of their future because you believe it’s important to maintain an idealized sense of personal and national identity? All of our children deserve more than a culture rooted in the false high of denigration, fairy tales, and brute force. They deserve a sober society capable of making responsible decisions. Let’s renew our reverence for truth and take the leap of faith together. Meet Congressional Candidate Joseph Perez-Caputo

Every single one of the candidates I’ve talked to has been fantastic. I love primary challengers because the American public deserves to have a choice when it comes to elections. That means elections at every level. The people always deserve to know who is running, what they stand for, and what they stand to gain with an alternative. The simple fact is that politics as usual in the United States isn’t working. We need a new generation of leadership. We need people who are ready to talk to regular human beings and hear their concerns. I really enjoyed talking with SugarRhi~ [https://substack.com/profile/360031069-sugarrhi] and Joseph Perez-Caputo [https://substack.com/profile/326662357-joseph-perez-caputo]! He’s an engaging man, and his story about his motivation for obtaining universal healthcare is extremely relatable. Let’s do the hard work of getting him on the ballot so that our voice gets some representation on the debate stage. The fight is today everyone! Meet Courage Candidate Alex Rikleen Who is Running For Senate in MA

Today Anthony Christian [https://substack.com/profile/107793067-anthony-christian] joined me for this talk with Alex Rikleen [https://substack.com/profile/355767117-alex-rikleen]. Alex is running for the Senate in Massachusetts. The thing I always want to emphasize with these talks is that primaries are healthy because they activate the voting base and they allow candidates to listen to diverse perspectives. Frankly, we’ve had enough of the undemocratic process that results in anointed DNC candidates who go on to lose. Primaries also allow name recognition, and we absolutely need more representatives like Alex at various levels of government. You can learn more about Alex here [https://www.alexrikleen.us/]. It’s not particularly easy to get on the ballot in Massachusetts, so please check out Alex’s web page and do what you can to help. This is particularly important if you or somebody you know lives in Massachusetts. Friends, the situation in the United States is dire. We can’t wait for the midterms, we can’t even wait for the primaries. Getting involved in campaigns like what Alex is running is something we can do today. You’ll feel better. You’ll be heard. You’ll reconnect with the power our system has made us forget we possess. It’s a great feeling. You can follow Alex on substack here: Thank you LeftieProf [https://substack.com/profile/116079548-leftieprof], Under the Golden Boot [https://substack.com/profile/173216193-under-the-golden-boot], Rachel-We are Renee and Keith [https://substack.com/profile/305439072-rachel-we-are-renee-and-keith], Kevin [https://substack.com/profile/327104204-kevin], E West [https://substack.com/profile/287069104-e-west], and many others for tuning into my live video with Anthony Christian [https://substack.com/profile/107793067-anthony-christian] and Alex Rikleen [https://substack.com/profile/355767117-alex-rikleen]! episode As We fight the Big Lies, the Little Lies Slip in Unnoticed artwork

As We fight the Big Lies, the Little Lies Slip in Unnoticed

Thanks for supporting the resistance! Thanks for your support: 30% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/b66e5c2e] 💙 40% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/01f1b0e8] 💙 50% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/0d3e6643] 💙 60% off [https://walterrhein.substack.com/6a8f4788] America is a nation of lies. It is not a “great” nation or a “free” nation or a “world leader.” This is a country built on slavery and bent on global domination. Every enterprise is meant to feed the rich and starve the poor. It’s a dog eat dog country and 99% of the population lives in perpetual terror of a very small pack of huge and ferocious beasts. We’re controlled by lies. For every lie we stand up to fight, ten more smaller lies slip through our defenses. Decent people find themselves constantly occupied with the labor of dismantling the endless false paradigms which spring up like weeds. We’re so busy in this pursuit that we have no time left over to indulge in productive action. The small lies are like a virus, and by the time we bring down one of the big ones, the smaller ones have grown large enough to occupy the vacant space. It’s a constant shell game of lies, and we’re the eternal losers. As a large lie expels its lingering death rattle, our opponents always try to coerce us into acknowledging, as if in concession, the inherent truth of a small lie. Exhausted from the fight, we capitulate. But we can’t afford to be generous in victory, that’s exactly what gives the small lies their strength. The big lie Most people are familiar with the concept of the big lie [https://jewishvirtuallibrary.org/joseph-goebbels-on-the-quot-big-lie-quot]. As much as Americans profess to hate the nazis, they certainly have proven adept at applying the propaganda techniques employed by Joesph Goebbels. Indeed, modern American culture uses a complex system of social control that even the members of the third reich might find innovative. The big lie is alive and well in the United States, in fact, it’s thriving. Part of the reason is that radical right wing politicians have learned how to supplement and support their big lies with an endless series of little lies. In America, the truth isn’t struck down by a single blow. Instead, it’s death by a million cuts. Small lies are cultivated and become the basis of how the general population thinks. People who are too stupid to think for themselves are brainwashed into believing a steady stream of false soundbites. They arrange these soundbites to give themselves the approximation of an independent personality. These people are thereby coerced into acting as unknowing foot soldiers who propagate a message of blatantly false propaganda which can infiltrate areas the state cannot reach through the power of public broadcasting. They spread their lies over dinner tables and at social gatherings. They create a background static that becomes a fertile ground for the next mass brainwashing campaign. Here are some examples. It’s a lie to say the media is liberal This is the kind of statement people make without any concern that it might be contested. They say that the media is liberal not as an opinion, but as an indisputable fact. However, the reality is that there is no actual evidence to support this absurd claim. The argument will often be made that the media is liberal because the majority of journalists lean liberal. However, even if the writers are liberal, in the end, the media outlets always get to decide what stories are published. In recent times, conservative groups have been consolidating [https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2017/11/consolidation-is-killing-the-myth-of-the-liberal-media] media groups exactly for the purpose of controlling the news. Billionaires own our media, not liberals, and it’s billionaires who perpetuate the lie that the media is against them. People often find they don’t have the energy to fight the claim that the media is liberal, but it’s a foundational argument for further attacks on our freedoms. Establishing the small lie that the media is liberal, helps prop up the larger lie that the media can’t be trusted. It’s a lie to say that prayer is prohibited in schools The radical right loves to perpetuate the false claim that their religion is somehow oppressed even though there is absolutely no evidence to make that case. You’ll often see people repeat the lie that prayer is prohibited in schools and use this as a basis for an argument that all of our social problems could be resolved if we’d only return to traditional values. However, the statement that prayer is prohibited at schools is blatantly untrue [https://www.freedomforum.org/#:~:text=Yes.,upon%20the%20rights%20of%20others.]. There is nothing more offensive than when a bunch of entitled Christians throw themselves a pity party over some non-existent attack on their “rights.” The only thing that’s prohibited is forcing kids to participate in some prayer that has nothing to do with their own personal religion. The Supreme Court’s decision actually protects Christians along with the members of every other religion practiced in this country. The small lie that prayer is prohibited is used to prop up the larger lie that there is an ongoing war on Christianity. This lie is then leveraged to create the artificial impression of a massive effort to attack Constitutional rights and freedoms which is based on a complete fabrication. It’s a lie to say that wealthy people are job creators People assume that because wealthy people have the money, the whole economy starts and finishes with them. However, the truth about wealthy people is that they aren’t inclined to use their money. They just hoard it like a dragon and indifferently watch the people and society around them wither and die. This belief represents yet another way where uneducated, juvenile thought can be molded into a weapon which is then used to attack the middle class. The uncontested lie [https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2012/09/rich-americans-arent-the-real-job-creators/262833/] that rich people are somehow “necessary” is used to prop up the larger lies of massive tax breaks for the elites, and also leads to the massive taxpayer funded bail outs which seem to happen every decade or so. The bail outs themselves disprove the hypothesis. If rich people are such great job creators, why do they perpetually need bail outs and subsidies to stay in business? Don’t ever concede a lie out of exhaustion or convenience In any argument you have to examine the validity of every assumption. The problem with attempting to engage in honest philosophical discussion with members of the radical right is that they hit you with such a rapid succession of lies that it’s difficult to know where to respond. Decent people always attempt to be courteous, even in an argument. Indecent people always opt for a no holds barred, take no prisoners form of attack. If they can slip their lies into public record and have them go unchallenged, they take the moment as a victory even if they lose the debate in question. Good people have to be more willing to call out lies, both big and small, when they are carelessly tossed into public discourse. The more a small lie is repeated, the more the general population begins to accept it as true. Once a lie is widely believed, it becomes very difficult to dispel the notion. Our society has deteriorated to the point where we can no longer afford to be mindful of the feelings of the members of the radical right. They can’t be allowed to spew lie after lie and continue on making public statements unopposed. If challenging them on a lie humiliates them, then so be it. If it causes you to lose friends, that’s something you have to tolerate as well. Lies have no place in polite discourse, and failing to challenge small lies leaves you exposed to getting buried later as they are widely adopted and weaponized. It was my great privilege to have this very important conversation with Dr. Yamicia Connor [https://substack.com/profile/108731402-dr-yamicia-connor] and A. Eevie Bateman [https://substack.com/profile/443649430-a-eevie-bateman]. The simple fact is that our media and our government is absolutely failing us. Women and children are being forced to die in agony in the United States, even though we have the knowledge to prevent their suffering. It’s a crime against humanity. It’s a crime against our families. It’s a crime against every one of us. Abortion bans lead to a direct increase in loss of life, yet malicious forces bury the data for the sake of preserving the ideology of cruelty. This has to change. We’ve all been indoctrinated to allow people to have their “deeply held beliefs” but at some point we have to start shouting about the fact that tolerating those beliefs causes human beings to die in agony. Dr. Connor is a tremendous resource and it’s in times like these that I wish I had a bigger platform. She has all the information we need, and she has the receipts to back it all up. However, we are in an era of data suppression. There are forces at work deliberately impeding our data collection. The government doesn’t want us to know how much damage it’s inflicting upon us. So, it’s up to us to spread the word. For those of you who are creators, please consider talking with Dr. Connor. Check out her web page and write articles to help share the truth of what’s happening. The simple fact is that the American people are being decimated. This is as big a story as anything else (and there are plenty of terrible scandals going around). We won’t solve this through silence. Please restack this. Please tell people about it. Please speak out. You’ll save the life of somebody you know. It’s only a matter of time that our corrupt system will consume everyone.
