Episode 6 - Tune in: Forms, Functions and the Future of Access

Send a text [https://www.buzzsprout.com/twilio/text_messages/2451182/open_sms] Part 1: Accessible by default  What if accessibility wasn’t an afterthought—but the starting point? 🎧  In this new episode of Accessible Horizons, we’re talking about building accessibility by default—and yes, we’re even making government forms exciting. Join us as we uncover how GC teams are shifting mindsets, designing with intention, and creating tools that work for everyone.  Plug in your headphones—accessibility starts here.   Part 2: Forms are us! In Government, forms are everywhere. While we no longer find stacks of paper forms on the Administrative Officer’s shelves, we have gone through a troubled period when it comes to accessibility of forms in the GC. PDF fillable versions or Word forms riddled with inaccessible features have replaced the good old hard copy forms, creating barriers for many users of adaptive technologies.  In this episode, we welcome the team at Employment and Social Development Canada that is eliminating barriers by offering GC Forms, a new, user-friendly, and accessible approach to develop and complete forms.  We will also go “behind the scene” to understand how accessibility considerations became part of the GC Forms development process.

Send a text [https://www.buzzsprout.com/twilio/text_messages/2451182/open_sms] Accessible Horizons, a podcast by the Accessibility, Accommodation, and Adaptive Computer Technology Program (AAACT) In this episode, we dive into the heart of accessibility innovation at the Government of Canada, beginning with a tour of the client space at AAACT. This is where clients can experience firsthand adaptive technology and collaborate with AAACT technicians to find personalized solutions for removing barriers. In the second segment, we explore the Social Model of Disability, a powerful framework that emphasizes that instead of focusing on fixing the individual, it is the environment that needs to change to remove barriers and promote inclusion. This perspective encourages a more inclusive approach in both workplaces and communities. To close the episode, we speak with Yazmine Laroche, the former Deputy Minister of the Office of Public Service Accessibility. Yazmine shares her proudest achievements from her time in government, emphasizes how one person truly can make a difference, and discusses her current work focused on driving inclusion. Her journey is a testament to the power of leadership in creating meaningful change. Tune in for inspiring insights and practical advice on fostering accessibility in the workplace and beyond!

Why is accessible signage and way finding important in the workplace? What are some best practices (using low and high tech solutions)? Are there standards for the GC? Part 3: Nadine and Luna: A conversation about how accessibility improvements in the workplace complement individual adjustments (10 min) In previous episodes, we talked about adaptive technology and other measures individual employees can use to do their work. This time. We will focus on a direct application of the Accessible Canada Act. The ACA requires organizations to proactively identify and remove barriers to the full participation of persons with disabilities. Who is responsible for making that happen? Do we need to wait for someone to renovate the building or redesign the system?  Are there steps we can take as managers to make the workplace more accessible? For example, how can I as a manager ensure my next team meeting is more accessible for all the members of my team?
