Even if you’ve never stepped foot into a museum, you’ve heard the name Pablo Picasso. After all, he was one of the most influential painters of the twentieth century. He lived from 1881 to 1973. That’s a long life and he created ridiculously good art from his early youth all the way through his final years on earth. What’s more, the style of Picasso’s artwork changed dramatically throughout his career. That’s what I want to talk about today: How does neuroscience  provide a lens through which to understand Picasso’s changing art styles? Believe it or not, Picasso’s blue and rose periods correspond to the salience network (SN) and default mode network (DMN)) in his brain.
