They can cause the hair to become over bonded, making the inner cortex fragile like glass. Even simple movements like brushing can cause the hair to shatter. It's a dangerous situation and definitely not worth the risk. The only way to recover from this hair nightmare is to get regular trims and wait for the affected hair to grow out, which can take years.
