The Jersey: Conversation with Peter Bills

The Jersey: The Secrets Behind The World's Most Successful Team. Everyone knows the All Blacks but not everyone knows why the All Blacks are the most dominant international team in sporting history. Peter Bills was brave enough to go out there and find out. In his book called The Jersey, he chronicles the history of this tiny island country with a population of about 4.8-million people and how they managed to conquer the world in rugby. The New Zealand All Blacks have also transcended rugby and are one of the most recognized sporting brands in the world, which is why they are able to attract attention from as far as the USA, where rugby is not a traditional sport. The book also delves into the business of rugby in New Zealand – and in other parts of the world. It is not shy to tackle the prickly issues such as the All Blacks' benefit from Polynesians and South Islanders, who have been frozen out of mainstream rugby by World Rugby in recent weeks. Sbu Mjikeliso chats with the author Peter Bills to discuss some of the issues the book touched on, with a particular interest in the contrasts and comparisons between South Africa and New Zealand. Sbu also quotes some passages from the book and puts it to Peter about the Steve Hansen's comments that "rugby was not a black man's sport" and other transformation-related issues that SA is still dealing with. It's a fascinating conversation. If you love your rugby, you will love this. Otherwise you well! Bryan Habana Forbes Africa Magazine Special

Swapping Sweat Pants for Suits! Sbu Mjikeliso sat down with Bryan Habana for Forbes Africa Magazine to discuss the former Bok great's future business plans now that he has retired. Habana recently teamed up with Ben Karpinski, Mike Sharman and Shaka Sisulu to for RetroActive, a sports digital marketing company that has already taken the market by storm. The fact that the company is already profitable in less than six months of existence – boasting a clientele that includes Cricket SA, Jawitz Properties and Biogen – already tells you that they have begun on the front foot. This is not your ordinary Bobescast interview. Sbu and Bryan delve into the often uncomfortable side of being an athlete: money, saving, investing, planning and letting go of the jersey. Bryan Habana says: “I didn’t know it was going to be my last year but I had already started studying at the Toulouse Business School, doing a basic Business Unit Manager course, trying to get and idea of the business world. I learnt about its various different subjects such as accountancy, marketing, digital marketing, strategy and a very basic introduction into law principles. “It’s easy to put goals in place from a rugby perspective. But in business, the biggest North Star is to try find my feet in this world. Everyone wants to be successful but that’s measured by what each person sees as success. I don’t have a rand value for success. “During my career, from a financial point of view, there were certain things I wanted to achieve by the time it ended: having a paid off house, paid off car and having investments in companies, stock or bonds." Stump Mic - Episode 02 - Fingers point at Dale Benkenstein

"Vishwa Fernando is to Deal Elgar what Zaheer Kahn was to Graeme Smith." If ever there was an apt, and scything, analogy to describe one batsman's struggles over a bowler, this was it by KT. The Proteas got whitewashed by Sri Lanka at home 2-0 in the Test series and we couldn't let it slide. It was momentous for the Sri Lankans as they became the first Asian team to win a test series in South Africa. Renowned cricket scribe Stuart Hess put it perfectly into context: "Tendulkar, Dravid, Sangakarra, Jayawardene, Murali, Mohammad Yousuf, Inzamam, Virat, Aravinda, Wasim, Waqar - all those great players from the sub-continent who couldn't win a Test series in SA. And its the 2019 Sri Lankan team captain by Dimuth Karunaratne who will. #SinkIn" - he tweeted. If that doesn't tell you the gravity of the defeat for the South Africans and the magnitude of the victory for Sri Lanka, then nothing will. This episode is a dedicated post mortem into what exactly went wrong for the Proteas and what went incredibly right for the visitors. A lot of people blame the abject batting performance on the batting coach Dale Benkenstein. Should he shoulder the blame or did the South African lack the mental fortitude required to step up to the task? What of ODI World Cup ambitions? Did those play in the minds of the players and they simply couldn't rouse themselves for the Sri Lankan challenge? We find this out from our panel of Sbu Mjikeliso as well as Sunday Times sports writer Khanyiso Tshwaku. Bobescast S2 E02 - Every match is a car crash

Another abject performance from the Stormers riles Sbu up but at least they came away with a win over the Lions. Gianni Lombard impresses and Lukhanyo Am grows into the No 13 that the Springboks will rely on come the World Cup and beyond. The topic gets hot when the discussion turns to tackling as Gcobani Bobo explains what he means by "the players experience a car crash each time the play a match". Khanyiso Tshwaku holds the fort and we bring you another exciting episode of Rugby's Freshest Podcast. Otherwise you well!
