Descripción

Kristen Theriault joins the program to unpack one of the most extraordinary Catholic memoirs in recent memory: Ruins and Light: In the Epicenter of Unrest by Father Gabriel Romanelli, the Claretian priest who serves the roughly one thousand Christians remaining in Gaza City at the Church of the Holy Family — the only Catholic church in Gaza. When war erupted on October 7, 2023, Father Romanelli was in Jerusalem but returned immediately to his parish, where displaced Christians — including those who fled after the bombing of the nearby Orthodox Saint Porphyrius Church — took refuge. The book was co-authored with a French journalist from Le Figaro through a series of phone calls and interviews, giving it an urgent, diary-like quality. Father Romanelli's recurring phrase: "I am well for today" — a lived expression of Give us this day our daily bread. Kristen walks through the brutal conditions inside the church compound: bombs falling nearby, the church itself struck by fire, community members killed by sniper fire and tank rounds, Father Romanelli himself wounded. The community sifted worms from flour to make bread, soaked raisins in water to make wine for Mass, and parents spent their days foraging for food for their children. Through it all, Father Romanelli — himself a cancer survivor diagnosed in 2020 — maintained and preached authentic hope, inspired by Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning and rooted in the Eucharist. Cardinal Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, wrote the foreword, describing the Gaza priest's role as simultaneously spiritual, pastoral, and humanitarian. Father Romanelli has been in regular contact with the Holy Father, first Pope Francis and now Pope Leo. Magnifica Humanitas & the Catholic Call to Engage AI — Ana Munley

Ana Munley — wife, mother, cradle Catholic, and host of the After Mass with Ana Munley podcast — joins the Catholic Morning Show to offer her unique perspective as a Catholic digital creator responding to Pope Leo XIV's first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas. Ana shares her journey with artificial intelligence: from early corporate exposure through Microsoft Co-Pilot, to subtle algorithmic influence on her content creation, to using AI for everyday tasks like meal planning during Lent. She reflects on how her understanding of AI has evolved — and how Magnifica Humanitas pushed it further still. Key themes from their conversation include: * Technology is not neutral — The Pope rejects the idea that tools are value-free, insisting they always reflect the values of those who create, fund, and profit from them. This reframes the question from what can technology do? to what kind of human being is this technology shaping? * The digital environment shapes souls — Every algorithm rewards something. Every post shapes the interior life of the person encountering it. Catholics online must ask: what vision of humanity am I promoting? * Christians must enter the construction site — Pope Leo XIV calls Catholics not to complain about culture from the sidelines but to become active shapers of it — servants of the coming kingdom, not builders of a new Tower of Babel * Data mining and hidden labor — The encyclical raises questions about the people and practices behind AI systems that many users never consider * Rebuilding Jerusalem — Ana's memorable takeaway: Catholics are called to rebuild Jerusalem in the digital space, centering the soul, God, and the dignity of persons over profit and algorithmic reward 🎙️ Find Ana Munley's podcast After Mass with Ana Munley wherever you get your podcasts. 📱 Follow Ana on Instagram and Facebook: @anamunley 📻 Listen to the Catholic Morning Show weekdays at 7 AM Central on the Iowa Catholic Radio Network [https://www.IowaCatholicRadio.com/?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show]:  #MagnificaHumanitas #PopeLeoXIV #CatholicAI #ArtificialIntelligence #AnaMunley #AfterMassWithAnaMunley #CatholicInfluencer #DigitalCatholicism #CatholicCreator #OnlineCatholic #CatholicPodcast #CatholicFaith #HumanDignity #TechAndFaith #CatholicMorningShow #IowaCatholicRadio #ChurchAndTechnology Credits: Produced, Edited, and Mixed by Ayden Pugh, Alexia Baker, and Brady Grimm.   LINKS You can follow us on Facebook, [https://www.facebook.com/iowacatholicradio] Instagram [https://www.instagram.com/iacatholicradio/], and Youtube [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ_w8fZ51egdFCWFGRSB4xA]! episode The Last Communion of Saint Jerome — Fr. Basil Nixen artwork

The Last Communion of Saint Jerome — Fr. Basil Nixen

Joining Deacon Mark Campbell from his monastery in Norcia, Italy, Fr. Basil Nixen is a Benedictine monk who has lived the monastic life for over twenty-two years. Raised in Yuma, Arizona, in a devoutly Catholic family — his own father is a permanent deacon — Fr. Nixen discerned his calling to religious life through seminary formation before discovering the Monastery of San Benedetto in Norcia, Italy, founded by Fr. Cassian Folsom, O.S.B., originally of Saint Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana. In this interview, Fr. Nixen discusses his new book The Last Communion of Saint Jerome, published by TAN Books, which examines one of the most beloved subjects in Renaissance sacred art: the dying Jerome receiving his final communion. Though the narrative source — a 14th-century text known as the Transitus of Saint Jerome — has long been considered a pious legend, Fr. Nixen argues powerfully that the legend draws on deeply authentic aspects of Jerome's life and character: * His Eucharistic devotion — Jerome's reverence for the Body of Christ as the center of Christian life * His love for Scripture — captured in his famous phrase, ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ, and illuminated through the Emmaus narrative in which the disciples move from Scripture to the Eucharistic breaking of bread * His Marian piety — Jerome authored the first Marian treatise in Latin, defending the perpetual virginity of Our Lady * His commitment to doctrinal purity — Jerome's fierce defense of the faith and the discipline of the Church Fr. Nixen also reflects on how Saint Jerome prepared for holy communion through fasting, bodily discipline, and the ordering of one's life toward God — an ancient and timely challenge for Catholics today. 📖 Pick up The Last Communion of Saint Jerome [https://tanbooks.com/products/books/the-last-communion-of-saint-jerome-the-eucharist-monasticism-and-priesthood-in-the-life-of-a-church-father/?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show]by Fr. The Catholic Morning Show - 06/08/2026

This Monday on the Catholic Morning Show, Deacon Mark Campbell brings two compelling conversations that speak directly to where the Church meets culture in 2026. First, Fr. Basil Nixen — a Benedictine monk of the Monastery of San Benedetto in Norcia, Italy — joins the show to discuss his new book, The Last Communion of Saint Jerome, published by TAN Books. Fr. Nixen traces the historical and spiritual roots behind the famous Renaissance artistic tradition of Jerome receiving his final communion, showing that the legend — long dismissed by scholars — actually reflects authentic dimensions of Jerome's life: his fierce love for the Eucharist, his devotion to Scripture, his Marian piety, and his commitment to the purity of the faith. Fr. Nixen also draws out the profound connection Saint Jerome makes between knowledge of Scripture and reception of the Eucharist — famously captured in Jerome's own words: ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ. A beautiful reflection for the week following the Solemnity of Corpus Christi and the upcoming consecration of the United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Basil Nixen through TAN Books. Then, Catholic influencer and digital creator Ana Munley — host of the After Mass with Ana Munley podcast — sits down to discuss Pope Leo XIV's first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas. Ana shares how the document challenged her own previous assumptions about the neutrality of technology, highlighting the Pope's insistence that technology always reflects the values of those who create, fund, and profit from it. She walks through the encyclical's themes of digital culture, the commercialization of human imagination, data mining, and the Church's call for Catholics to be active builders — not passive bystanders — in the digital world. As Ana puts it: we are called to rebuild Jerusalem, not construct another Tower of Babel. 🎙️ Find Ana Munley's podcast After Mass with Ana Munley wherever you get your podcasts, and follow her on Instagram and Facebook at @anamunley. 📻 Listen to the Catholic Morning Show weekdays at 7 AM Central on the Iowa Catholic Radio Network [https://www.IowaCatholicRadio.com/?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show]:  #CatholicMorningShow #IowaCatholicRadio #SaintJerome #LastCommunion #TANBooks #Eucharist #CorpusChristi #SacredHeart #CatholicBooks #BenedictineMonk #MagnificaHumanitas #PopeLeoXIV #CatholicAI #ArtificialIntelligence #CatholicInfluencer #DigitalCatholicism #AfterMassWithAnaMunley #CatholicFaith #CatholicPodcast #DeaconMarkCampbell Credits: Produced, Edited, and Mixed by Ayden Pugh, Alexia Baker, and Brady Grimm.   LINKS You can follow us on Facebook, [https://www.facebook.com/iowacatholicradio] Instagram [https://www.instagram.com/iacatholicradio/], and Youtube [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ_w8fZ51egdFCWFGRSB4xA]! episode The Lives and Martyrdoms of Saints Peter and Paul — Jason Gale artwork

The Lives and Martyrdoms of Saints Peter and Paul — Jason Gale

Just ahead of the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Jason Gale of TAN Books joins the show to discuss a remarkable new translation by Father Robert Nixon: The Life and Martyrdom of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, drawn from the writings of Saint Abdias of Babylon. Saint Abdias was a disciple of the apostles, one of the seventy-two sent out by Christ, and the first patriarch of the Persian church — making him a firsthand witness to the events immediately following the close of the Acts of the Apostles. Jason walks through Peter's repeated confrontations with the sorcerer Simon Magus, whose demonic signs captivated Emperor Nero and whose downfall came when Peter prayed and cast out the demons sustaining his fraudulent flight — sending Simon crashing to the ground. He also highlights Peter's miracles: healing a man lame from birth, raising Tabitha from the dead, and healing the paralyzed. The book also records why Peter requested crucifixion upside down — out of profound humility, declaring himself unworthy to die as his Lord did — and preserves Peter's final words of praise from the cross. On Saint Paul, Jason recounts the Malta episode: after surviving a shipwreck and a venomous viper bite, Paul healed the island's leader Publius, and the entire population of Malta converted to Christianity. The book also records the miraculous phenomenon at Paul's beheading — an event that recalls Paul's own words in 1 Corinthians about feeding his flock with milk. The Life and Martyrdom of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is available at TAN Books [https://tanbooks.com/products/books/the-life-and-martyrdom-of-st-peter-and-st-paul/?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show], on Amazon, and through your local Catholic bookstore. #SaintPeter #SaintPaul #TANBooks #CatholicBooks #EarlyChurch #Martyrdom #CatholicHistory #SimonMagus #Malta #ApostolicFaith #CatholicMorningShow #IowaCatholicRadio #CatholicPodcast #FatherRobertNixon #SaintAbdias #ChurchHistory #CatholicRadio #SolemnityPeterPaul Credits: Produced, Edited, and Mixed by Ayden Pugh, Alexia Baker, and Brady Grimm.   LINKS You can follow us on Facebook, [https://www.facebook.com/iowacatholicradio] Instagram [https://www.instagram.com/iacatholicradio/], and Youtube [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ_w8fZ51egdFCWFGRSB4xA]!
