He was born in 1534 on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, then part of the Spanish Empire. Though physically frail and plagued by health problems throughout his life, José possessed remarkable determination and a deep desire to serve God. As a young man, he traveled to Portugal to study and soon entered the newly founded Society of Jesus, inspired by the missionary zeal of the Jesuits. At just nineteen years old, Anchieta was sent to Portuguese Brazil, a vast and largely undeveloped mission territory. The journey itself was difficult, but it was only the beginning of a lifetime of sacrifice. Upon arriving, he devoted himself to learning the languages and customs of the indigenous peoples. Unlike many Europeans of his time, he sought not merely to govern or instruct, but to understand those he served. Anchieta became one of the great missionaries of the New World. He traveled enormous distances through forests, mountains, and coastal settlements, preaching the Gospel, teaching children, and caring for both settlers and native communities. His mastery of local languages allowed him to compose catechisms, prayers, and instructional materials that helped spread the faith more effectively. He is often called the father of Brazilian literature because of the works he produced in Portuguese, Spanish, Latin, and indigenous languages. One of the most famous episodes of his life occurred when he volunteered to remain as a hostage among a hostile native tribe during peace negotiations. While awaiting the outcome, he reportedly composed a long poem in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, writing verses in the sand and committing them to memory. This Marian devotion remained a hallmark of his spirituality throughout his life. The Church also remembers Anchieta for his efforts to defend indigenous peoples from exploitation and abuse. While not every challenge could be overcome, he consistently advocated for their dignity and Christian formation. Devotion to Saint José de Anchieta remains especially strong in Brazil, where he is honored as one of the founders of the nation's Catholic heritage. He is regarded as a patron of missionaries, catechists, and educators. His feast day on June 9 is marked with celebrations throughout Brazil, particularly in regions where he labored and founded missions. His life reminds the faithful that evangelization requires patience, sacrifice, cultural understanding, and above all a deep love for the souls entrusted to one's care. Saint José de Anchieta, faithful missionary and servant of Christ, pray for us. He lived during the twelfth century, a time when political rivalries and ecclesiastical disputes often affected the life of the Church. Born around the year 1090 into a noble family in Yorkshire, England, William was known for his learning, kindness, and generous spirit. In 1141, he was elected Archbishop of York, one of the most important sees in England. What should have been a joyful appointment quickly became a source of difficulty. Questions were raised about the circumstances of his election, and powerful opponents challenged his right to the office. Though William maintained his innocence and sought peace, the controversy grew, eventually leading to his removal from the archbishopric. For several years, William endured exile and public humiliation. He could easily have become bitter or resentful, yet contemporary accounts describe him as patient and forgiving. Rather than fighting for power, he placed his trust in God and continued to live as a faithful servant of the Church. His willingness to suffer injustice without abandoning charity became one of the defining features of his life. Eventually, the accusations against him were overturned, and William was restored as Archbishop of York. His return to the city became one of the most celebrated moments in his life. Tradition tells us that great crowds came out to welcome him, rejoicing at the return of a shepherd they had long loved. According to a well-known story, the bridge crossing the River Ouse was so crowded that it collapsed, yet no one was seriously injured, an event attributed to William's intercession. Sadly, his restoration was short-lived. Only a short time after returning to York, William died in 1154. Some traditions suggest he may have been poisoned, though the historical evidence remains uncertain. What is certain is that devotion to him spread rapidly after his death, fueled by reports of miracles at his tomb. The Church honors Saint William of York as a model of patience, humility, and trust in divine providence. His life demonstrates that holiness is often revealed not in success, but in the way one endures adversity. His feast day on June 8 has long been observed in York and throughout parts of England. He is often invoked by those facing false accusations, setbacks, or periods of uncertainty. Saint William of York, patient shepherd and faithful servant of Christ, pray for us. Though less well known today than some of his contemporaries, Robert was widely revered in his own time as a spiritual father and miracle worker. He was born around the year 1100 in the city of York, England. As a young man, Robert pursued studies and was eventually ordained a priest. Those who knew him were struck by his devotion to prayer and his desire for a deeper spiritual life. Seeking greater holiness, he entered the Benedictine monastery of Whitby. Yet like many reform-minded monks of his era, Robert was drawn to the growing Cistercian movement, which sought to return monastic life to the simplicity, poverty, and strict observance envisioned by Saint Benedict. Robert joined the Cistercians and became one of the founding monks of Fountains Abbey, one of the most influential monasteries in medieval England. The early years were difficult. The monks endured poverty, harsh conditions, and uncertainty, yet Robert's calm faith and perseverance helped sustain the community. His holiness became widely recognized, and he was eventually chosen to lead a new foundation at Newminster Abbey in Northumberland. As abbot, Robert combined firmness with great charity. He emphasized prayer, obedience, humility, and care for the spiritual welfare of his monks. Under his leadership, Newminster flourished and became the mother house of several additional monasteries, extending the influence of the Cistercian reform across England and Scotland. Contemporary accounts describe Robert as a man of deep contemplation who was also gifted with practical wisdom. Many miracles were attributed to him both during his lifetime and after his death. People traveled long distances seeking his prayers and counsel, convinced that he possessed a special closeness to God. The Church honors Saint Robert of Newminster as a model abbot whose life demonstrates the power of faithful leadership rooted in prayer. He reminds us that true reform begins not with programs or structures, but with personal holiness and fidelity to God's call. Devotion to Saint Robert remained strong throughout northern England for centuries, especially among Cistercian communities. His feast day on June 7 is observed with prayers for religious vocations, perseverance in community life, and growth in the contemplative spirit. Saint Robert of Newminster, faithful abbot and servant of Christ, pray for us. He was born around 1080 in what is now Germany and raised among the nobility. Through family connections, he was appointed to important positions at the imperial court and enjoyed the privileges and influence that came with them. Though ordained, he initially lived much like many clerics of his age, more concerned with worldly affairs than with the radical demands of the Gospel. Everything changed during a violent thunderstorm. According to tradition, Norbert was thrown from his horse when lightning struck nearby. Believing himself on the verge of death, he cried out to God for mercy and resolved to change his life. This experience marked the beginning of a profound conversion. He renounced his former ambitions, embraced a life of penance, and devoted himself entirely to preaching and the reform of the Church. Norbert traveled throughout Europe as an itinerant preacher, calling clergy and laity alike to repentance and fidelity. His message was often challenging, but it was backed by personal holiness and sacrifice. Seeking to establish a community that would combine the contemplative life with active ministry, he founded the Order of Prémontré, commonly known as the Norbertines or Premonstratensians, in 1120. The order followed the Rule of Saint Augustine and emphasized common prayer, devotion to the Eucharist, pastoral work, and community life. One of the themes that marked Norbert’s ministry was his deep devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. He vigorously defended the Church’s teaching on the Real Presence at a time when some questioned it. This Eucharistic focus became a lasting characteristic of the order he founded. Later, Norbert was appointed Archbishop of Magdeburg, where he worked to reform the clergy and strengthen Christian life throughout the region. Although he preferred the simplicity of religious life, he accepted the office out of obedience and carried out his duties with courage and humility. The Church honors Saint Norbert as a model of conversion and renewal. His life demonstrates that even those deeply immersed in worldly concerns can become powerful instruments of God's grace. Devotion to Saint Norbert remains especially strong among the Norbertine communities spread throughout the world. His feast day on June 6 is marked with prayers for Church reform, Eucharistic devotion, and perseverance in religious life. Saint Norbert, faithful reformer and servant of Christ, pray for us. He was born around the year 675 in Wessex, England, and given the name Winfrid. Raised in a Christian family, he entered monastic life at a young age and quickly distinguished himself through his intelligence, holiness, and gift for teaching. Yet despite a successful life as a monk and scholar, Winfrid felt called to leave the security of the monastery and preach Christ to peoples who had not yet fully embraced the faith. After receiving the blessing of the pope, he traveled to the Germanic lands, where pagan practices remained widespread. There he took the name Boniface and began the work that would define his life. He preached tirelessly, founded monasteries, established dioceses, and worked to strengthen the organization of the Church throughout the region. His mission required not only zeal, but patience and wisdom, as he sought to guide entire communities toward Christian life. One of the most famous stories associated with Boniface concerns the Oak of Thor, a massive tree revered by local pagans as sacred to the Norse god. According to tradition, Boniface publicly cut down the tree to demonstrate that the pagan gods had no power over him. When nothing happened, many who witnessed the event became more open to hearing the Gospel. Whether remembered as history or symbol, the story reflects Boniface's fearless confidence in Christ and his determination to replace superstition with the true faith. Boniface was also a reformer. He worked to improve the discipline of clergy, strengthen ties with Rome, and ensure that the growing Church remained faithful in doctrine and practice. Through his efforts, Christianity took deeper root in lands that would later become Germany, the Netherlands, and surrounding regions. In his old age, Boniface returned to missionary work among the Frisians. In 754, while preparing a group of converts for Confirmation, he and his companions were attacked and killed. Tradition says that he refused armed protection and met death peacefully, holding a book of the Gospels. Thus the great missionary ended his life as a martyr. The Church honors Saint Boniface as a patron of Germany, missionaries, and those who labor to spread the faith. His feast day on June 5 is marked with prayers for evangelization and courage in proclaiming Christ. His life reminds us that the Gospel advances not through force, but through conviction, sacrifice, and unwavering trust in God. Saint Boniface, courageous missionary and faithful servant of Christ, pray for us. The SSPX Podcast is produced by Angelus Press [https://angeluspress.org/pages/our-apostolate], which has as its mission the fortification of traditional Catholics so that they can defend the Faith, and reaching out to those who have not yet found Tradition.   WHAT IS THE SSPX? The main goal of the Society of Saint Pius X is to preserve the Catholic Faith in its fullness and purity, to teach its truths, and to diffuse its virtues, especially through the Roman Catholic priesthood. Authentic spiritual life, the sacraments, and the traditional liturgy are its primary means of bringing this life of grace to souls. Although the traditional Latin Mass is the most visible and public expression of the work of the Society, we are committed to defending Catholic Tradition in its entirety: all of Catholic doctrine and morals as the Church has always defended them. What people need is the Catholic Faith, without compromise, with all the truth and beauty which accompanies it. https://sspx.org [https://sspx.org/en]
