Born in Ukraine, raised in Jordan, Rita shares memories of her childhood in Ukraine and talks about what the war in Ukraine really means for Ukrainians. Navigating between her identities which are often conflicting with each other in the media, as a Palestinian living in diaspora, she also shares her thoughts about her “lost homeland” - Palestine. Russia's military invasion in Ukraine on February 24th 2022 prompted a discourse between uncivilised vs relatively civilised - heroes vs unsung heroes - whose suffering is more worthy? In the first episode of this series - In The Peculiar Fate of Oppressed People, you'll meet Yousef Mema aka @Joegaza93, a Palestinian nurse, humanitarian and social-media activist joining us from the world's largest open-air prison, the Gaza Strip. During the May 2021 attack on Gaza, citizen journalism became prominent and Yousef quickly gained popularity on instagram for his reportage of the war.
