Alex Maceda in Conversation: Art, writing, creative process and inspiration

⚡️EPISODE Alex Maceda is a Filipina-American artist and writer living in Joshua Tree, CA. Her energetic abstract work and lyrical writing explore the medial spaces between waking and dreaming, reality and imagination, literal and abstract. She is particularly inspired by changing light and her desert landscape, as well esoteric, shamanic, and spiritual themes. We dive into all kinds of incredible topics about art, life, spirituality, process, ideas and collective consciousness - enjoy ✨ 🙂 GUEST Defined by movement, her abstract practice utilizes the physicality of freeform mark-making and experiments with the materiality of paint and it’s transparency (or lack thereof) to articulate layered, multi-faceted compositions. In her abstract figuration, Alex makes manifest compositions she seems in dreams and meditative states onto canvas. Alex’s paintings have appeared in shows across the US including LA, Portland, Joshua Tree and Miami. She has self-produced solo presentations in San Francisco and Joshua Tree. Alex was a resident artist at Saga Residency (Iceland), Willow House (TX) and Sunlit Ranch (NM). Her piece, “purple is a late blooming color,” was nominated for a Pushcart Prize for writing in 2020. Alex was one of the first traditional abstract artists to enter the NFT space; over 3000 unique NFTs of her work have been collected. Her abstract generative project ALTARS explored the space between canvas and code. She holds a BA in Classical Studies and Studio Art from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business. Hope you enjoy 🌿 🙂 GUEST A prolific muralist, ceramicist, installation artist, and painter, Ian Ross (@ianrossart [https://www.instagram.com/ianrossart/?hl=en]) is a San Francisco based interdisciplinary artist whose love of the natural world deeply influences his practice. Creative since he was a young child, Ross was raised in a family with three generations of artists. Born and raised in Marin County, he draws from his meditative, solitary experiences in Northern California’s forests and beaches to inform his signature approach to abstract imagery. Ross’s background in ceramic sculpture comes through in his painting style. Similarly to the way he works with clay, he paints with gestural marks that respond to the medium’s tactile qualities. Whether working on a canvas, a wall, a beach, or a sculpture, Ross allows himself to get carried away in an intuitive creative process, channeling the calm he feels while communing with nature through organic shapes. Living in San Francisco through his formative years, surrounded by concrete buildings and urban blight, Cameron wanted to contrast his surroundings by bringing nature in to a place where nature was lacking. He wanted to bring life and warmth to an otherwise cold, harsh environment. Cameron hopes that by painting things of love and hope that it might inspire others to persevere through hard times. Cameron resides in San Francisco with his wife and two sons where he paints murals. He remains involved in his community teaching classes for all ages. She creates refined objects for the home and custom tableware collections for fine dining restaurants. You can see her work at restaurants such as Californios, Nightbird, Sorrel and Pasta Bar. She also collaborates with interior designers to create unique, custom objects of art designed intentionally for the home. She creates her art by hand on her potter’s wheel. Ceramics have been a part of Erin's life for the past 20 years. She has been a teacher, a production potter and managed a pottery studio. Erin holds a Juris Doctor and a Masters in Urban Planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Bachelors of Science from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She practiced land use law and child welfare law before focusing solely on her art. Erin lives with her husband, two daughters and son. When she is not elbow deep in clay she's chasing her children, hiking or dreaming up the next big family travel adventure.
