Over The Scottishist

The Scottishist is here to examine our national cultural icons and find out why they just seem to be the most Scottish things you can think of. Like why whisky or haggis? What is tweed? Why do we go nuts for Hogmanay? Is our national animal really a mythical creature?  What's the story with the Forth bridge? What is a kelpie or a ceilidh for that matter? Why tartan, shortbread and bagpipes? Together we are going to get right down to the nuts and bolts of the facts, fictions and feelings we have for the Scottishist stuff and what they really says about Scottishness today.   Hosted on Acast. Hogmanay

Hogmanay Come in come in it’s nice you see you! This is The Scottishist and I am Laura Macdonald.  In this Festive edition of The Scottishist we are are going old school in terms of Scottish traditions, by ignoring Christmas completely and putting all of our energies into celebrating the New Year - known in these parts as Hogmanay. So grab your friends, a woolly hat, hip flask, slice of fruitcake - it’s the last day of the year, so it’s a party you’ll be looking for.  Thanks to JonBoy for the theme music.  Bliadhna ùr mhath dhuibh uile.  Happy Hogmanay everyone! You can check out the Stonehaven Fireballs Website [https://stonehavenfireballs.com/] to follow along the action. If you are interested in finding a Nippy Dip or Loonydook near you then try searching facebook for your nearest swimming community and ask them if you can pop along - outdoor swimmers are super friendly! You can follow The Scottishist Podcast on instagram, facebook and tiktok and hopefully I will learn how they work one day.   Join our Patreon [https://www.patreon.com/TheScottishist] Thank you to TheJonBoy for the Theme music  Check out my Bookshop.org [https://uk.bookshop.org/lists/the-scottishist] reading list ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast. Saltire

Why the Saltire? Hello and welcome to the first episode of The Scottishist. In every episode of The Scottishist I’m taking a dive into an icon of Scottish culture to find out why it is just so iconic -  and I’ll be bringing the answers - right to your ear holes.  For the first episode we are getting under the blankets with the vexillology crew and looking the flag of Scotland right in it’s blue and white face. What’s the story, why do we fly the Saltire? And when did we start? What’s is got to do with Saint Andrew? What shade of blue is it exactly, does it matter?  And what does the saltire actually mean in Scotland today?  Checkout my reading list Bookshop.org [https://uk.bookshop.org/a/13248/9781905222681]             Saltire History: The History of the Saltire - Graham Bartram [ https://www.flaginstitute.org/pdfs/Graham%20Bartram.pdf] Scottish Flag Trust [https://scottishflagtrust.com/the-flag-heritage-centre/saltire-memorial/] The history of Scotland written in Latin by George Buchanan ; faithfully rendered into English [https://quod.lib.umich.edu/e/eebo/A29962.0001.001/1:14?rgn=div1;view=fulltext#DLPS1125].
