(Ep. 3) Critical Thinking Revealed: Dr. John Cook, Cognitive Psychologist on Climate Misinformation

In the third episode of our new podcast, "Critical Thinking Revealed," Dr. Linda Elder interviews cognitive psychologist Dr. John Cook. Dr. Cook's work focuses on arming people with tools to recognize and reduce the influence of misinformation, and particularly misinformation around climate change. Throughout the discussion, Dr. Elder explicates the critical thinking moves in Dr. Cook's work and reasoning. Dr. John Cook is a research assistant professor at the Center for Climate Change Communication at George Mason University, researching cognitive science. In 2007, he founded Skeptical Science, a website which won the 2011 Australian Museum Eureka Prize for the Advancement of Climate Change Knowledge and 2016 Friend of the Planet Award from the National Center for Science Education. John co-authored the college textbooks "Climate Change: Examining the Facts" with Weber State University professor Daniel Bedford. He was also a coauthor of the textbook "Climate Change Science: A Modern Synthesis" and the book "Climate Change Denial: Heads in the Sand." In 2013, he published a paper analyzing the scientific consensus on climate change that has been highlighted by President Obama and UK Prime Minister David Cameron. In 2015, he developed a Massive Open Online Course at the University of Queensland on climate science denial, that has received over 25,000 enrollments. John earned his PhD in Cognitive Science at the University of Western Australia in 2016. In the "Critical Thinking Revealed" podcast, we interview those who have shown exceptional reasoning in a given area and explicitly illuminate the examples of critical thinking therein. (Ep. 2) Critical Thinking Revealed: Scientist David Robert Grimes on the Climate Crisis

In the second episode of our new podcast, "Critical Thinking Revealed," Dr. Linda Elder interviews scientist and author Dr. David Robert Grimes. This continues episode 1's theme of the human impact on earth's climate and how this can be mitigated. Through the discussion, Dr. Elder explicates the critical thinking moves in Dr. Grimes' work and reasoning. David Robert Grimes is a scientist and author with a keen interest in the public understanding of science. He is author of the book "The Irrational Ape - Why We Fall for Disinformation, Conspiracy Theories and Propaganda" (with the North American title "Good Thinking - Why Flawed Logic Puts Us All at Risk and How Critical Thinking Can Save the World"). Dr. Grimes writes on science and society for outlets including the Guardian, the Irish Times, Scientific American, The Atlantic, the BBC, the Financial Times, and the New York Times. He appears frequently on news media across the world to discuss topics as diverse as viral health disinformation to cancer science, and he gives talks across the world on the importance of evidence in society. Dr. Grimes was a 2014 winner of the John Maddox Prize, jointly awarded by the charity Sense about Science and the scientific journal Nature. He is an elected Fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (CFI). episode (Ep. 1) Critical Thinking Revealed: Prof. Alex Hall of UCLA on the Climate Crisis cover

(Ep. 1) Critical Thinking Revealed: Prof. Alex Hall of UCLA on the Climate Crisis

In the first episode of our new podcast, "Critical Thinking Revealed," Dr. Linda Elder interviews Prof. Alex Hall of UCLA's Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Department. As Prof. Hall explains his research in the area of human impact on earth's climate, Dr. Elder explicates the critical thinking moves in his work and reasoning. Alex Hall is a Professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, Director of the Center for Climate Science at UCLA and Interim Director of UCLA’s Sustainable LA Grand Challenge. His research is focused on reducing climate change uncertainty at both regional and global scales. At the regional scale, he has been active in the development of downscaling techniques to understand climate change at the scales most relevant to people and ecosystems. Prof. Hall and his team at the Center for Climate Science use these techniques to create neighborhood-scale projections of future climate. They have recently completed downscaling studies over the Los Angeles region and the Sierra Nevada, and projects are currently under way to investigate the future of extreme precipitation and fire in California. Prof. Hall was a Lead Author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 5th Assessment Report’s chapter on regional climate change and a Contributing Author to its chapter on climate model evaluation. He was also Coordinating Lead Author of the Los Angeles Region Report, part of California’s Fourth Climate Change Assessment. In 2016, he received the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Atmospheric Sciences Ascent Award, and in 2019, he was awarded the AGU’s Future Horizons in Climate Science: Turco Lectureship.
