Bilder der Natur – Tiere, Pflanzen und wie wir sie sehen

Yana Wernicke und Saskia Groneberg über ihre Arbeiten zur Beziehung des Menschen zur Natur . Mit “Bilder der Natur – Tiere, Pflanzen und wie wir sie sehen” wendet FOTOTREFF den Blick auf unsere Mitgeschöpfe. Wir hinterfragen das Verhältnis zwischen Mensch und Natur und laden zum gemeinsamen Nachdenken über unser Zusammenleben ein – darüber, wie wir Natur formen, manipulieren und kontrollieren, aber auch darüber, wie wir die Natur brauchen und was sie uns gibt. Yana Wernicke (*1990) ist eine Fotografin, die derzeit in der Nähe von Frankfurt am Main lebt. Ihre Arbeit dreht sich häufig um die fotografische Darstellung von Tieren sowie um das Verhältnis vom Menschen zur Natur und zu anderen Lebewesen. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Fotografen Jonas Feige arbeitete sie an dem Projekt Zenker, das als Buch 2021 von Edition Patrick Frey veröffentlicht wurde. Im Jahr 2023 veröffentlichte sie ihr Buch “Companions” bei Loose Joints, ein Porträt von zwei jungen Frauen, die Tiere vor der Schlachtung gerettet haben und mit diesen in enger Bindung zusammenleben. Die in Berlin lebende Künstlerin Saskia Groneberg (*1985) erforscht in ihren Arbeiten domestizierte Natur wie Parks, Gärten oder Büropflanzen. Sie ergründet diese als Spiegelbilder und Projektionsflächen von Mensch und Gesellschaft, wobei Ideal und Wirklichkeit oft im Widerspruch zueinander stehen. Neben umfangreichen fotografischen Werkgruppen umfasst ihre künstlerische Arbeit auch Artist Books, Siebdrucke, Videos und Installationen.  Ihre Arbeiten wurden vielfach ausgezeichnet und waren in Institutionen wie dem Victoria and Albert Museum London, dem Museo de Arte Moderno Mexico, den Deichtorhallen Hamburg und dem Fotomuseum Winterthur zu sehen. Die Künstlerinnenbücher “Vesuv, Venus” und “Büropflanze” sind im Verlag Edition Taube erschienen.

Photobook Strategies - Outer Space Press & Chantal Seitz

Magdalena Wysocka, Claudio Pogo & Chantal Seitz on photobooks and zines Photography in book form have a continuing appeal even beyond the self publishing hype of the 2010 years. Zines, artist’s books or regular publications in large print runs all work in different ways for authors, readers and publishers alike. At FOTOTREFF #41, the artist duo Claudio Pogo and Magdalena Wysocka (from Outer Space Press) engaged in an inspiring conversation with artist, photographer, and photo editor Chantal Seitz on visual storytelling and the different conditions and strategies for the development of photobooks. Magdalena Wysocka and Claudio Pogo, grounded in their artistic pursuits, blend photography, appropriation, and archives. Their works span monoprints, photographic ‘ready-mades,’ and artists’ books. Wysocka, born in 1987, holds an MA in Printmaking, while Pogo (born in 1978) studied fine arts and photography in Bremen before founding PogoBooks Publishing in Berlin. Since 2016, their creations have flowed through Outer Space Press (OSP), a small press known for its hybrid approach. OSP’s titles can be found in prestigious collections, including MoMA and The MET. She studied photojournalism and documentary photography in Hanover. In collaboration with Collin Davis, she published the photobook “Stay Safe Out There” with DISTANZ Verlag in 2024. Julia Kochetova, Sebastian Wells and Tobias Laukemper In the first part of the evening, we talked about the challenges that photographers, the media and we as viewers face when it comes to images of war and conflict. In our panel discussion, Ukrainian photographer Julia Kochetova and OSTKREUZ photographer Sebastian Wells (Soлomiya Magazine) provided insights into their work. The discussion was moderated by Tobias Laukemper. Julia Kochetova is a photojournalist and documentary filmmaker based in Kyiv, Ukraine. She studied journalism at the Taras Shevchenko National University (UA) and the Mohyla School of Journalism (UA), as well as taking part in the IDFA Academy (NL). She covered the Maidan revolution (2013-2014), the annexation of Crimea (2014) and the Russian-Ukrainian war (2014-present). Her work from the conflict zone has been presented in exhibitions in UK, USA, France, Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Serbia, Portugal and Ukraine and has been published by Vice News, Der Spiegel, Zeit, Bloomberg, Vanity Fair, The Guardian, FP, Reuters, NBC. kochetova.rocks Sebastian Wells lives in Berlin and has been a member of the OSTKREUZ agency since 2019. He studied photography at the Ostkreuzschule Berlin, the University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld and the KASK in Ghent and works as a photographer for newspapers and magazines such as Stern, Süddeutsche Zeitung, 11Freunde oder Neue Zürcher Zeitung. ERROR! Fehler in der Fotografie, Alina Frieske & Tobias Kappel

TALK mit Alina Frieske und Tobias Kappel Irritationen generieren unerwartete Ideen. Die Abweichung von der Norm eröffnet ein Feld von Möglichkeiten. Alina Frieske und Tobias Kappel diskutierten, was in der Kunst eigentlich ein Normalzustand ist, welche Wahrheiten jenseits des Realismus zu finden sind und wie Fehler in ihrer fotografischen Arbeit zu neuen kreativen Lösungen führen. Das Werk von Alina Frieske entwickelt sich an der Schnittstelle zwischen Fotografie und Malerei, wobei sie die Darstellung des menschlichen Körpers in einer vernetzten Umgebung untersucht. Mit Hilfe von Collagetechniken erforscht sie die Vielfalt der gespeicherten Informationen, die unsere virtuelle Identität ausmachen, und die Auswirkungen digitaler Technologien auf unser tägliches Leben. Alina studierte Visuelle Kommunikation an der Acadamie Beeldende Kunsten Maastricht (ABKM) und schloss 2019 mit einem MA in Fotografie an der Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne (ECAL) ab. Tobias Kappel ist ein in Berlin lebender Künstler, der sich in seiner Praxis vor allem für die Übersetzungsprozesse zwischen verschiedenen Bildformen interessiert. Neben Fotografien arbeitet er auch mit Screenshots, Scans und Kopien, wobei er seine Bilder oft durch mehrere Stufen der Reproduktion und Transformation führt. Kappel wurde 1987 in der DDR in Potsdam geboren und lebt sowie arbeitet mittlerweile in Berlin. Seine Arbeiten wurden bereits mehrfach ausgezeichnet, bspw. von der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Photographie, und er stellte bei u. a. bei C/O Berlin, der Alfred Erhardt Stiftung, Berlin, als auch dem Contact Photography Festival in Toronto aus.
