169 episodesWelcome to the Saving Throes podcast! This is my Tabletop role-playing game podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a topic or theme along with my take on current happenings in the world of tabletop role-playing games and semi regular updates on the games I am currently involved with, or new games or products I have come across. Every December I get nostalgic for the Lord of the Rings films from the early 2000s. They were great adaptations of the books, and also served to really elevate the fantasy genre into the mainstream eye (for both good and ill). Lord of the Rings has always been a natural fit for the roleplaying game hobby. It hasn't had too many games made of it, but the ones that have been published vary greatly between all 3 of them. This week I do an overview of all the Lord of the Rings games that have been released, and my impressions of them. I have not played all of them, but have had fair experience with most. Tune in to hear how different these games are from one another, and why the current iteration of the game is the best it has ever been. Welcome to the Pining For Pixels podcast! This is my video game variety show podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a subject or theme that interests me, and I will speak about what is on my mind in the world of video games! I have been looking forward to getting to this particular episode of Video Game Book Club all year. The wait was worth it! This classic is a hidden gem, that is thankfully much more accessible today thanks to Steam, and particularly the Steam Deck, which this is a perfect fit for! I wanted to be sure I completed this game before its remake comes out next year, and I am glad that I decided to do this! This is a classic RPG that stands right up there with the classics among Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. This game sets itself apart with the world it is building, and how good the characters feel to interact with. Make sure you don't miss this one if you are an RPG fan. This is the first part of a 2 part Video Game Book Club episode, with the second half to be posted before the end of this month. Tune in to find out why I am so enthralled by this game! It is the Christmas season and you may be spending lots of time with your family and friends, or have to attend of facilitate festive events for work over the next few weeks. Perhaps you can bring your TTRPG hobby along for the ride? This is a question many players have struggled with since the inception of the hobby - how do I get others to play D&D with me if they know nothing about it or have reservations about playing based on sensational or inaccurate stories they might have heard? I decided to see what advice is out there for introducing the game to your non-gaming acquaintances, and give my comments and thoughts on this advice as well. Tune in to hear what piece of advice I was expecting to see repeated several times, but was shocked only to see once. Today marks the 30th anniversary of the Sony PlayStation, if you can believe it. For the last 3 decades, Sony's platform has taken the video game industry by storm, as a plucky new entrant to the console wars in the 90's, after being spurned by Nintendo, Sony has had an undeniably commanding presence in this industry ever since. This week's episode is focussed on the PlayStation platforms over the years and my experiences with them, as well as talk about some of the best and iconic games for each generation. Tune in to hear some of my favourites and let me know if you agree or if you think I missed something! Happy birthday PlayStation! This past week the hobby got a pretty big signal boost to the international stage when Elon Musk posted about his opinion on Wizards of the Coast and their treatment of Gary Gygax in the recent Making of D&D book. Whether you agree with him or not, it has set off quite the firestorm of reactions across the content creator space. It got me thinking of other controversies this hobby has endured and made me wonder what this will look like in another decade? I wonder because I often look back on prior controversies with the benefit of hindsight. In this episode I weigh in on my thoughts around Elon Musk's comment, and I also talk about the controversies of the past, both recent and decades old controversies. Tune in to hear me repeat one of my favourite quotes when it comes to controversial topics like this: "Reasonable minds can differ."
