Ep 39: Child Hot Car Deaths: The Pattern Behind These Tragedies — And How to Prevent Them
Since 1998, more than 1,000 children in the United States have died in hot cars, and most of these tragedies follow just a few repeating patterns.
In today’s episode, we look at the three most common circumstances behind child hot car deaths:
• Children forgotten by caregivers
• Children intentionally left in vehicles
• Children who gained access to vehicles on their own
Through the stories of Sofia Aviero, Ke’torrius “KJ” Starkes Jr., Sydney Stanley, Kameron Jamel Williams, Amillio Gutierrez, and Parker Scholtes, we’ll look at what happened, what experts say may contribute to these tragedies, and most importantly, practical prevention strategies that could help save lives.
This episode is different from my usual content, but with temperatures rising, I felt this was an important story to tell.
🚨Update: When I recorded this episode, there had been 2 reported child hot car deaths in the US in 2026. While editing, that number increased to 3. As of publishing, there have now been 4 reported deaths this year.
