Book of Romans: Love in Action

Bob Schwahn  |  Lead Pastor  |  June 28, 2026   Referenced Scripture:  Romans 12:9-16, 1 John 4:19-21, Ephesians 4:15-16   Reflection Questions: 1. How does God evaluate our worship at our community worship gatherings?  How are we to tangibly love God and love others?  Give examples. 2. Where might God give you a “needs improvement” score? 3. Read Paul’s description of how we are to love one another in the family of God… Romans 12:9-16 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.  Do not be conceited.   What grabs your attention?  What sticks out to you? What do you like about this text of Scripture? What do you not like about this text?  (ie. What is challenging or convicting?) Where do you have questions about this text? Where do you personally need to grow or change?   What is a practical way you will apply this to your life this week?   4. How can we as a church learn to meet the needs of others in a way that we all feel known and loved?   5. How does learning to love people that are difficult to love cause us to mature in our faith?  How have you seen this in your own life? Share some examples.   6. What are the barriers we experience in the American church that makes this kind of love difficult?  How can we practically overcome these barriers?  What can you do personally to help break these barriers down?   7. What would a worship gathering be like if everyone came in looking for how they could love and serve others rather than looking to be loved and be served?  (ie. Book of Romans: Grace, Mirrors, and the Body of Christ

The Mirror Question When you think about yourself, what voices most influence how you see yourself (success, failure, social media, family expectations, work, appearance, etc.)? How does the gospel challenge or reshape those voices? 2. Sober Judgment Paul calls us to "think of yourself with sober judgment" (Romans 12:3).Why do you think Paul warns against thinking too highly of ourselves? How can thinking too poorly of ourselves also become a form of self-focus? Follow-up: Which tendency do you struggle with more—self-exaltation or self-deprecation? 3. Grace and Gifts Paul emphasized that our gifts are "grace-gifts"—something received, not achieved.How does viewing your abilities, opportunities, and spiritual gifts as gifts of grace change the way you think about yourself and others? Follow-up: Is there a gift God has given you that you could steward more intentionally for the benefit of others? 4. Belonging to the Body We concluded with the idea that life in Christ is not about being the center, but about belonging and serving. What does it practically look like for you to move from asking "What about me?" to asking "How can I serve?" in your family, workplace, friendships, or church community this week? Book of Romans: Living Sacrifices

Where in your spiritual life have you struggled to see the change you have wanted to see? What has made that change difficult for you? What area of your life do you find yourself regularly disobeying God? Read Romans 12:1-2 2. “Therefore” What is the “therefore” there for? What is Paul referring back to at the beginning of chapter 12? 3. “In view of God’s mercy” Why would reflecting on the grace and the mercy of God provide motivation and a catalyst to desire change in your life or obey God? Have you ever obeyed out of fear rather than gratitude? What is the challenge/problem of letting fear be the motivation to surrender your life to God? 4. Take a few minutes to reflect on the cross of Jesus and on how you have seen the grace and mercy of God in your life. Share some of the ways you have seen God’s mercy. Take a few minutes to thank God in prayer for what He has done. 5. What does it mean to “offer your body as a living sacrifice”? What are examples of how you have done this or should be doing this? Are there any areas of your life that you are holding back from God? Explain. What makes these areas of your life difficult to surrender to God? 6. “True and proper” is literally translated “logical” (greek: logicon) Why is surrender to God the only “logical” response to the good news of the gospel? 7. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world” What does it mean to conform to the pattern of this world? What assumptions do I hold that come more from culture than Scripture? How does the world think differently than God in the areas of success, happiness, identity, sexuality, money, or power? 8. Where am I adopting cultural values instead of biblical values? Where do I need to renew my thinking? 9. Why do you think that transformation begins first in the renewing of our mind? 10. What content fills my mind? What voices are the loudest in my mind? Does it move me toward Christ or away from Him? Explain… 11. What practices are helpful to you to renew your mind and have God’s perspective over the perspective of this world? Where do you need to grow in renewing your mind? How will you do this? Honest Questions: Hell and God’s Judgement

When you hear the question, “How could a loving God send people to hell?”, what emotions or assumptions immediately come to mind? How did this message challenge, deepen, or reshape the way you think about that question? 2. The sermon described hell as “the final form of exile from God” rather than simply punishment. How does viewing the Bible through the lens of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration change the conversation about judgment? 3. In Luke 16, the rich man’s deepest issue was not wealth, but a heart curved inward on itself. Where are you tempted to become spiritually indifferent—to God, to others, or to suffering around you? 4. The cross shows Jesus entering our exile to bring us home. What stands out most to you about the idea that God personally stepped into judgment and suffering for humanity? 5. The sermon ended with the question: “Who am I becoming?” What habits, loves, priorities, or patterns are currently shaping your heart?
