GSS#1: Dr. Roberto Padilla on Fear, Addiction, Success, and Setting a New Course for Yourself

Welcome to the first episode of the Newburgh Futures Podcast. Newburgh Futures is a project that uses the power of story to build community and imagine futures locally here in Newburgh and more broadly in communities across the country. The podcast is a project of the Collaborative for Equity in Literacy Learning at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, New York. Our first podcast series will bring you the talks from the Guest Speaker series at Newburgh Free Academy, West Campus High School. Each week, guests from the community were invited to speak to the students about their professional journey and offer advice. Each speaker had important things to share, including stories and insights that could help the high school students think about their futures. In the first episode, Dr. Roberto Padilla shares how fear and addiction led to his success.  Dr. Padilla grew up in Newburgh, N.Y. and graduated from Newburgh Free Academy (NFA), the local public high school.  Dr. Padilla was in foster care when young and experienced a lot of moving around in the city.  When he was in 10th grade, Dr. Padilla’s two close friends were murdered within 3 months of each other.  After losing his two friends in high school, he became dedicated to learning and succeeding in school for the first time in his life. [http://www.newburghfutures.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Padilla-pic.jpg] Dr. Padilla went on to attain his bachelors in Education and his masters and Ph. D. from Fordham University. He has been a teacher, coach, vice principal, and principal.  Dr. Padilla returned to Newburgh and is now the Superintendent of the Newburgh Enlarged City School District [https://www.newburghschools.org/].  Dr. Padilla shares with the NFA West students his passion for learning and his belief in their ability to, like him, “set a new course for yourself.” Date of recording: 9/28/17 3:10 Dr. Padilla talks about his earliest memory, a traumatic memory, being visited by a woman who was to put him in foster care, at five years old. 5:30 Two years later his is able to go back home with his mother. 6:15 He remembers moving a lot, and how adults always were making and breaking promises. 7:40 Dr. Padilla remembers a fire in his neighborhood, and how his friend Anthony was hit by a car and passed away. 9:30 Dr. Padilla says he always went to school; school was a better place to be than at home; he didn’t go to school to learn, he just showed up. 10:45 In tenth grade he had two friends who were murdered. He spent the next days and weeks looking over his shoulder, worrying that someone might take him out. 12:30 He now went to school with a new purpose, started paying attention and doing his work, and staying after school to get extra help. 14:00 Went to college and studied abroad, was addicted to achieving, getting two masters and a doctorate. 15:15 Dr. Padilla tells the students that in life, we are faced with decision in life: do you persevere and overcome, crush it. “You too can set a new course for yourself.” 16:00 “I deeply, deeply care about you,” says Dr. Padilla, “deeply care about NFA West.” 17:15 Talks about the mantra of the year is “Doing it with Love.” 18:20 Talks about Newburgh student and baseball player who has stage 4 cancer; informs the group about the event, “A run for Ryan.” For more information about Dr. Roberto Padilla & the Newburgh Enlarged City School District: Superintendent’s Corner [https://www.newburghschools.org/page.php?page=10] Follow Dr. Roberto Padilla on Twitter [https://twitter.com/newburghsup?lang=en] Newburgh Central School District [https://www.newburghschools.org/] Deeper Learning Equity Fellowship [https://www.equityfellows.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=714213&type=u&pREC_ID=1114944]
