episode The Final Push for Cereals 2026, and Rain at Last After Nine Weeks Dry cover

Beskrivelse

With Cereals 2026 just days away, it is all hands on deck to get the Trailer of Dreams onto site and show ready. In this episode we lay a woodchip path to keep the mud at bay, load up the merchandise, and get the beer, the gin and the branded barrels ready for the stand. After nine weeks of dry weather we also finally get the rain we have been praying for, and we look at what almost 100mm could mean for the crops and for harvest, with the barley already changing colour. Back at base, work continues on the new fertiliser store, where we walk through the bund and containment system built to catch any spill, and tell the cautionary tale of a leak that took years to put right. We also host a group of Nuffield Global Focus scholars from around the world, hear the topics they are researching, and welcome a busy day of international visitors before everyone heads to the show. Elsewhere there is more concrete around the yard, a strong run of output from the sprayers, seed planning for next season, and a few birthday surprises along the way. From show preparation to honest talk about weather, harvest and the realities of running a modern farm, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. episode Barley Harvest Complete, the Range Rover Winner Revealed and a Field Fire Averted cover

Barley Harvest Complete, the Range Rover Winner Revealed and a Field Fire Averted

The barley harvest is in the shed, and the big question of the year is finally answered. In this episode we reveal the results of our hybrid against conventional trial, and after nine weeks of drought the yields are better than we dared hope. With the combines blown down, attention turns to the cultivations and the careful job of putting right the damage left behind by the infrastructure projects crossing the farm. There is plenty happening away from the fields too. We take a close look at a tractor track conversion system and the numbers behind it, get into a frustrating tyre failure and warranty battle, and meet more of the harvest team and hear their stories. We also draw the Range Rover raffle at last and find out who has won the keys, with a good sum raised for charity in the process. And then there is the moment that could have been a disaster, when a spark in a dry field started a fire with the wind blowing towards standing wheat, and some quick thinking saved the day. From the first yields to a lucky escape, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. Harvest 2026 Is Underway, the First Barley Yields Are In

Get Your Tickets - https://pxfarms.myshopify.com/products/range-rover-raffle-ticket Harvest 2026 is properly underway, and the first barley is coming into the store. In this episode we get the full field by field picture of how the crop is yielding after nine weeks of drought, and the early results are more encouraging than we feared. We also explain a costly quirk of this year, with the grain coming in so dry that we are losing weight and value, and the clever solution we have found to win some of that back over the winter. Out in the field the whole operation is in full flow, with four combines, the chaser bins and the lorries all working together, and a brilliant team settling into the rhythm. We get into the detail that makes the difference, from a new tyre trial and our move to 48 metre tram lines, to the big test of the year, hybrid barley against conventional, and what it could mean going forward. There is also time to enjoy the best bit of the whole year, watching the store fill up, an honest word on the accounts and grain prices, and a final reminder about the Range Rover raffle for charity before Friday's draw. From the first yields to the team bringing it in, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business. Harvest 2026 is finally here, and the combines are rolling into the barley. In this episode we take the first samples of the year, sweat on the moisture and the all important bushel weight, and find out whether the crops are going to be as kind as we hoped after such a difficult dry run. With four combines, chaser bins and lorries all coming to life at once, we also meet this year's harvest team, a brilliant international crew from Ireland, New Zealand and Australia, and explain the system that keeps it all running smoothly. Behind the scenes there is a new grain testing machine to speed up the weighbridge, the new fertiliser store taking its first tanks, and the small army of jobs it takes to get day one right. It is not all work. James is raffling his beloved green Range Rover, the swimming pool is finally being filled ready for the harvest party, and the famous harvest meal rota is revealed. episode A Conversation With Two Australian Farmers, the Fertiliser Shock and the Future of the Family Farm cover

A Conversation With Two Australian Farmers, the Fertiliser Shock and the Future of the Family Farm

Fresh from the fiftieth birthday party and Cereals, we sit down with two farmers who have come a very long way to be here, brothers David and Ed Cox from Western Australia. With one of them due to fly home within the hour, we take the chance to talk honestly about what farming looks like on the other side of the world, and how many of the same pressures are being felt everywhere. We get into the global fertiliser and fuel shock and how war and wider disruption have hit supply and pricing, the extraordinary story of clearing five thousand acres of failed carbon scheme woodland to build a farm at Esperance, and the big question hanging over agriculture in both countries, whether the family farm can survive rising land values, capital gains tax and succession, or whether the future is corporate. We also talk through a major shift in their business, cutting back on wheat and pushing livestock towards half of the operation, and share some honest and at times provocative views on commodity prices, whether the world really needs to grow more food, and where farming goes from here. From global markets to the future of the family farm, this is an honest conversation behind the scenes of modern farming, on both sides of the world. 0:00 Intro 0:49 What's happening in Australia 1:13 The fertiliser and nitrogen shock 2:31 How Australian fertiliser supply works 6:22 Clearing the trees to build a farm 10:13 Splitting the family business 15:42 Two brothers, two businesses 17:00 Land values, capital gains tax and succession 19:18 Is this the end of the family farm? 21:32 Plateaued yields and a fertiliser tax 24:39 Are we really growing too much food? 26:33 The Monday fertiliser scramble 27:46 The fuel supply worry 31:12 Cutting wheat, doubling livestock 35:18 The protein debate 36:43 Excited by the challenge, or adjusting? 43:04 Good rains and the season ahead Contact: Email: media@pxfarms.com #Farming #Agriculture #FarmingUK #AustralianFarming #AusFarming #FamilyFarm #Fertiliser #Livestock #Dairy #FarmingPodcast #GlobalFarming #ArableFarming #FarmLife #Harvest2026 #PXFarms Thank you for watching and supporting our farming journey! episode The Final Days Before Harvest, Walking the Crops and the Damage Being Done to Our Land cover

The Final Days Before Harvest, Walking the Crops and the Damage Being Done to Our Land

Harvest is now just days away, and everything is coming together. In this episode we walk the crops one last time before the combines roll, checking over the wheat, the oats and the barley, weighing up the yield potential after a difficult dry spell, and allowing ourselves a little cautious optimism that it could be better than we feared. Behind the scenes the harvest team complete their health and safety and first aid training, the chaser bins and firefighting kit get their final checks, and the new fertiliser store edges closer to taking its first tanks. We also explain a big rotation decision for the year ahead, with oilseed rape coming back in, and what that could mean for the bottom line. It is not all plain sailing. We deal with yet more fly tipping and a frustrating exchange with the council, and take an honest look at the damage being done to our land by the major infrastructure projects crossing the farm. With the team buzzing and the bets on for the first day of cutting, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business.
