In 664 A.D., King Oswiu of Northumbria convened the Synod of Whitby to resolve conflicts between Celtic and Roman Christianity, which had split his household over differing traditions like the date of Easter. Influenced by the argument that Roman authority traced back to Saint Peter, the keeper of heaven's keys, Oswiu chose to align the Anglo-Saxon Church with Rome, ultimately setting a new religious path for England.
