episode Make A Difference Minute: More Than Job Training cover

Beskrivelse

On this Make A Difference Minute, I have Dr. Tommy Davis, Executive Director of the North Alabama Homebuilding Academy, sharing why their mission goes far beyond preparing people for careers in the skilled trades. While the academy was created to help address workforce needs, Dr. Davis quickly realized something even more important was happening. Lives were being changed. He shares the story of a man who entered the program while experiencing homelessness and living in a tent. Through training, determination, and opportunity, that individual found employment, gained stability, and eventually moved into a home of his own. Dr. Davis also talks about the confidence that comes from learning practical skills, working with your hands, and discovering what you're capable of accomplishing. For many students, the academy becomes more than a place to learn a trade. It becomes a place to rebuild belief in themselves and create a new path forward. On this episode, I'm joined by Robert Diamond "Bobby the Balloon Guy" of Balloon Masters Entertainment, the man behind The Zany Magical Balloon Show. Recorded on location at the Sheffield Public Library during its Summer Reading Adventure, this conversation goes beyond balloon animals and explores the people and purpose behind the smiles. Bobby shares how Balloon Masters Entertainment began, how his performances have evolved over the years, and what he's learned through bringing joy, laughter, and unforgettable memories to children and families across the country. Make A Difference Minute: Learning to Carry the Pebble

On this Make a Difference Minute, I have my friend, Fran Birdwell, who is living with stage 4 colon cancer while also carrying the profound grief of losing two sons, Jacob and Matthew. Rather than trying to “get over” grief, Fran has learned that grief becomes something we carry. Drawing from a poem by Jessica Watson, she shares the powerful image of grief as a pebble. It is something we never fully put down, but over time we learn how to carry it without allowing it to consume us or steal our purpose. Because grief touches every life, Fran believes this message extends far beyond grieving parents. Whether we have lost a child, a spouse, a parent, a friend, or dreams we once held dear, we all face loss. The challenge isn’t to forget or move on, but to keep living, loving, and finding meaning while carrying what remains. Through unimaginable pain, Fran’s life is a testament to hope, resilience, & the truth that grief and purpose can exist side by side. episode Carrying the Torch: Hope Beyond Grief cover

Carrying the Torch: Hope Beyond Grief

Tonight on The Mark White Show, I'm joined by Fran Birdwell for a deeply personal conversation about grief, hope, and learning how to live with both. Fran has been living with stage IV colon cancer and has endured the unimaginable loss of two sons. Through profound heartbreak, she has discovered that grief is not something we simply get over. It’s something we carry. It’s not easy. In fact, it can be very, very difficult. But we carry the torch for those who no longer can, not smoldering in sorrow, but shining brightly with love, purpose, and remembrance. Fran shares a powerful “pebble of grief” perspective and reminds us that even the smallest victories in the midst of loss are still victories worth celebrating. Real stories. Real people. episode Make A Difference Minute: Greatness of Heart cover

Make A Difference Minute: Greatness of Heart

On tomorrow’s Make a Difference Minute, I reflect on a word we don’t hear very often, but perhaps need more than ever: magnanimous. It means having a greatness of heart. It describes people who are generous in spirit, gracious in disagreement, and unwilling to let bitterness or resentment define them. Being magnanimous doesn’t mean ignoring wrong or pretending hurt doesn’t exist. It means choosing dignity over revenge, character over pettiness, and kindness over cruelty. In a world that often rewards outrage and division, greatness of heart is a quiet strength. It’s the ability to rise above, to forgive, and to treat others with respect even when it’s difficult. Sometimes, making a difference begins with the way we respond when we’ve been wronged.
