Beskrivelse

In this episode of The Room Went Dark, Amalie and Lorraine break down the chilling horror film The Utah Cabin Murders, a low-budget thriller inspired by a real-life tragedy. What begins as a peaceful family getaway in a remote cabin quickly spirals into a brutal home invasion—and a desperate fight for survival. We explore the film’s story, its real-world inspiration, and whether it succeeds as a horror retelling… or misses the mark. The Tiede family spent quality family time at their cabin in Oakley, Utah. Rolf and Kay Tiede are joined by their two daughters, Linae and Tricia, and Kaye's mother, Beth Potts. In December 1990 Von Lester Taylor and Edward Steven Deli would enter the home and murder Kay and Beth, kidnap Linae and Tricia and attempt to murder Rolf. Luckily the two girls and their father would survive the horrific ordeal. Thank you for listening and please rate and review on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. episode Dirty Harry (1971) -Justice, Rights & the Scorpio Killer cover

Dirty Harry (1971) -Justice, Rights & the Scorpio Killer

In this episode of The Room Went Dark, Amalie & Lorraine examine the enduring appeal and controversy of Dirty Harry, the film that introduced audiences to Harry Callahan and helped define the modern cinematic vigilante. Released in 1971 and directed by Don Siegel, Dirty Harry follows San Francisco police inspector Harry Callahan as he pursues a sadistic serial killer known as Scorpio. The film became a major box-office success and sparked decades of debate about policing, justice, civil liberties, and the balance between the rights of suspects and the protection of victims. Topics Discussed HARRY CALLAHAN: HERO OR THREAT? Harry Callahan is presented as a cop willing to bend rules in pursuit of violent criminals. We discuss: * Why audiences were drawn to Harry's uncompromising approach. * Whether Harry represents common-sense justice or dangerous vigilantism. SCORPIO: THE FACE OF CHAOS Scorpio is one of cinema's most unsettling villains: * His apparent lack of remorse. * His manipulation of the legal system. * The fear and frustration he creates among both citizens and law enforcement. CRIMINAL RIGHTS VS VICTIMS' RIGHTS A central theme of our discussion is the film's most controversial question: What happens when legal protections for suspects appear to conflict with justice for victims? We explore: * Harry's frustration when evidence is excluded because of police misconduct. * The film's suggestion that procedural protections can allow dangerous offenders to evade punishment. * Arguments in favour of constitutional safeguards and due process. * Whether the film fairly portrays the criminal justice system or exaggerates its failures. * The continuing relevance of these debates in modern discussions about policing and public safety.
