jakson Mon kansikuva

Kuvaus

In this episode, we explore the history of the Mon people through the rise and legacy of the Dvaravati civilization, a Mon cultural and political network that flourished in central Thailand from the 6th to 11th centuries. Rather than forming a single empire, the Mon established independent city-states marked by moated settlements, vibrant trade, and deep Buddhist and Hindu traditions shaped by Indian influence. Sites such as Nakhon Pathom, Si Thep, and U Thong reveal how Mon society developed distinctive art, religious architecture, and political customs while interacting with powerful neighbors including Chenla, Angkor, and Pagan. As warfare, dynastic ties, and regional shifts transformed mainland Southeast Asia, Dvaravati gradually declined, but Mon influence endured in the culture, ceremony, and artistic traditions of later Thai kingdoms such as Sukhothai and Ayutthaya.

jakson Afanasievo Culture kansikuva

Afanasievo Culture

In this episode, we explore the Afanasievo culture, a prehistoric society of Siberian herders who flourished between roughly 3300 and 2500 BCE in the Minusinsk Basin and Altai Mountains. The episode traces their origins as Western Steppe Herders migrating from the Don-Volga region into Inner Asia, bringing with them pastoralism, wheeled vehicles, metalworking, and new forms of burial practice. We examine their role in transforming the eastern steppes through livestock herding, especially sheep and cattle, and consider their widely discussed connection to the Proto-Tocharian language. From their expansion into areas as far as central Mongolia to their lasting influence in regions like Dzungaria, this episode shows how the Afanasievo culture became a crucial link between western Eurasian innovations and the ancient societies of Siberia and Inner Asia.
