According to the biblical account, we're around 970 BC, and ancient Israel is at a turning point. The text tells us King David has just died after forty years as king, and his son Solomon has taken over a kingdom that's described as more unified and powerful than ever. But Solomon's not the oldest son. He's not the obvious choice. The narrative presents his claim to the throne as coming through some intense palace drama involving his mother Bathsheba and the prophet Nathan. So when this chapter opens, Solomon is portrayed as a young king who needs to prove himself—to his people, to the tribal leaders, to the military commanders, and probably to himself. 162 | Ezra's commission (Ezra 7-8)

It’s the fifth century BCE—most likely 458 BC—and the Persian Empire stretches from the borders of India all the way west to the shores of the Aegean Sea. Jerusalem, once the capital of the kingdom of Judah, had been destroyed by the Babylonians about a hundred and twenty years earlier, its people scattered, its Temple reduced to rubble. But things have been changing. Cyrus the Great conquered Babylon decades ago, and under Persian rule a first wave of Jewish exiles was allowed to return home. By the time our story opens, the Temple has actually been rebuilt—completed around 516 BC—but the people, their laws, their spiritual life? That’s another story entirely.
