Join us today as Rachel shares the mission of the organization Matthew 25, a nonprofit celebrating its 30th anniversary.  Matthew 25 was founded in 1996 at the Zion Church of Christ in Henderson, Kentucky. Today, it’s serving 37 counties in western Kentucky and southwest Indiana, with clinics in Henderson, Owensboro, Bowling Green, and Evansville. Karen and Rachel discuss the history of the AIDS epidemic, pointing out the early confusion, fear, and prejudice that defined the 1980s and 1990s. Rachel shares how important parental support for the LGBTQ+ youth and those diagnosed with HIV is to keep strong support systems. Matthew 25 offers various support services, including counseling, to help patients and their families, especially in rural areas where local resources might be limited. Matthew 25 uses a patient-centered approach, offering a wide range of services like primary healthcare, mental health support, dietary planning, case management, and transportation. Rachel Trout mentioned that they’re like a “one-stop shop,” making sure patients get the care and medication they need during their visits.

As allies, we can experience pushback and judgment for standing up for the LGBTQ+ community, but it is essential to embrace our roles with courage. I always encourage parents and allies to seek out those who genuinely support them and their children. It's crucial to surround ourselves with individuals who respect and uplift us, especially during challenging times. In my case, the situation with my friend served as a catalyst for reflection. I realized that if someone could turn their back on me so easily, perhaps our friendship wasn’t as strong as I believed.
