S2 Ep2232: Sunshine City Strong with Kayla West and Lily Simone

On this episode of Sunshine City Strong, host Kayla West sits down with Lily Simone, a coach at The Yard Gym in St. Petersburg, to discuss strength training, building confidence in the gym, and the importance of creating a welcoming fitness community for people of all experience levels. Lily shares her personal journey into fitness, from her background as a professional dancer with the Orlando Magic to discovering strength training while working at LA Fitness in St. Pete. What started as a way to stay strong and healthy eventually grew into a passion for coaching, helping others, and creating meaningful connections through fitness. The conversation explores Lily’s transition into group fitness coaching and how discovering the community aspect of fitness changed the way she viewed training. After years of individual workouts and bodybuilding competitions, Lily found a new appreciation for the energy, accountability, and support that comes from working out alongside others. Kayla and Lily discuss how The Yard Gym creates an inclusive environment where anyone—from beginners stepping into a gym for the first time to experienced athletes—can feel challenged, supported, and welcomed. Lily emphasizes that fitness is not about being perfect, but about finding movement that works for you, building consistency, and celebrating progress along the way. Lily also shares some of her most rewarding moments as a coach, including helping members improve their form, build confidence, and accomplish goals they once thought were out of reach. She highlights the importance of coaches understanding each person’s individual journey and creating a space where participants feel seen, encouraged, and motivated. The episode also dives into the difference between motivation and discipline, why consistency matters more than perfection, and how building healthy habits can positively impact every area of life. Lily encourages anyone who feels intimidated by a gym to take the first step, try something new, and remember that every fitness journey begins somewhere. The conversation concludes with Lily sharing her favorite exercises, fitness routines, and advice for anyone looking to live a healthier lifestyle. Whether you are new to fitness or looking to take your training to the next level, this episode highlights the power of movement, community, and believing in yourself. It has transformed not only her body but also her mindset, and she is passionate about helping others experience that same confidence and strength. Understanding how overwhelming the fitness world can be with so much conflicting advice, Lily’s goal is to simplify the process, help clients discover what works best for them, and support them in reaching their goals—all while making fitness enjoyable and sustainable with room for balance in everyday life. Fitness has taught Lily discipline, resilience, confidence, and the power of believing in herself. It has shown her that she is capable of doing hard things, and she strives to help others realize they are capable of the same. Lily grew up dancing and had the incredible opportunity to perform professionally as a dancer for the Orlando Magic for four seasons. During that time, she also developed a passion for bodybuilding and earned Nationally Qualified athlete status in 2018. Those experiences shaped her dedication to movement, athletic performance, and helping others become the strongest version of themselves. One of Lily’s favorite things about THE YARD GYM St. Pete is its focus on developing well-rounded athletes. The gym’s programming allows members to train toward their individual goals—whether building strength, improving performance, or simply becoming healthier. Just as importantly, members are surrounded by an encouraging community that supports them every step of the way. S2 Ep2243: HISTORICALLY ST. PETE Rui Farias Previews Events: Vintage St. Pete Bill DeYoung 7/20 & more

Welcome to Historically St Pete, a weekly conversation where we explore the truths, and sometimes the myths of the people and events that created the Sunshine City. Thanks for joining us today, my name is Rui Farias, and I have the best job in town – the Executive Director of the St. Petersburg Museum of History [https://historystpete.org/]. The Museum of History has been sharing the stories of the Sunshine City for 104 years and we are happy to share those stories with you here on Radio St. Pete. The Museum of History is more than just a building filled of thought- provoking, educational and entertaining exhibits – or the repository of the city’s archives. We also bring history to life by producing and presenting several events in and out of the Museum! MONDAY 7/20 For instance, this evening at 6pm, journalist and author Bill DeYoung will be introducing the fourth series of his Vintage St. Pete book series. Bill will share stories of iconic places of St. Pete’s past, like the:  Bayfront Center Arena (hockey, circus, Rowdies, concerts, grads)  St. Petersburg Alligator Farm (6 th Street south – shoe maker)  Fountain of Youth (Tomlinson)  Evening Independent (afternoon paper / sunshine offer) Doors are at 6pm with the program starting at 6:30p. Books are for sale and Bill will be signing them after! SATURDAY JULY 25 First, at 10am the Museum’s newest trolley tour: the historic Prohibition Tour We’ll be departing from the St. Petersburg Distillery and exploring south and west St. Pete – including the Jungle Prada area – long rumored to be a hotbed of illegal booze and gambling activity during the Roaring 20s! The tour returns to the St. Pete Distillery where we’ll tour the new Great Gatsby era Speakeasy and sample one of their delicious cocktails! Saturday night we’ll kick off a new event at the Museum of History: Punchline on The Pier. It’s a comedy night of headlining comedians who will tie in local history, and even some Florida Man tales, into their acts.  If there is any type of history that was made for a night of comedy, it’s definitely Florida history. Doors are at 6pm and the fun begins at 7p. ELVIS is in the house! And finally, we’re bringing some musical history to the Museum as well.  On August 7, 1956, a young man from Tupelo, Mississippi performed three sold-out shows at the then Florida Theatre located on 5 th Street, between Central and First Avenue South – across the street from the now Florida Holocaust Museum. This beautiful 2,500-seat theatre was designed to replicate a Spanish courtyard, much like the Tampa Theatre, but much larger. Elvis Presley thrilled the crowds – especially the teenage girls. On this coming August 7, 70 years after his first St. Pete performance, we’ll be celebrating the event with Award-winning journalist and author Bob Kealing. He will present the riveting story of Elvis Presley’s rise to fame in Florida – including that fateful 1956 performance at the Florida Theatre in downtown St. Pete. Kealing will discuss his book, Elvis Ignited! which provides a road map to Elvis’s time in the Sunshine State.   #stpetersburgmuseumofhistory #ruifarias #events #historicalcomedy #SPMOH #downtown St. Pete #radiostpete #historicalmuseum
