In a late-stage trial, adding the drug Erleada to standard testosterone-suppressing hormone therapy around the time of prostate-removal surgery improved outcomes in men with high-risk localized or locally advanced cancer. Patients on the combination were far more likely to have minimal to no detectable cancer at surgery, and the company reported meaningful reductions in the risk of progression or death. If these results hold up and regulators agree, it could change the treatment playbook for a large group of patients—especially since a significant share of prostate cancer diagnoses in the US fall into the high-risk category. US-Iran strikes and Hormuz Shifting to technology and markets: memory chips—long treated as a commodity corner of the semiconductor world—are now being priced like strategic infrastructure for AI. Micron and South Korea’s SK Hynix have both climbed to market values above one trillion dollars. The driver is high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, which has become a choke point for AI data centers. In plain terms: AI systems can be limited not only by how fast they compute, but by how quickly they can access the right data. Episode Transcript China’s new AI contender We begin with artificial intelligence, where Beijing-based Moonshot AI has released Kimi K3, an open-weight model that researchers say may be narrowing the gap with top US systems. The company says it performs strongly on jobs like coding and spreadsheet work, and its very large context window could make it better at handling long books or big codebases with fewer made-up answers. What really grabbed attention is the scale: 2.8 trillion parameters, making it the largest open-weight model announced so far. It is far too big for consumer hardware, but symbolically it matters. Analysts say it shows Chinese firms can still build frontier AI despite US chip restrictions, and it adds to the sense that the global AI race is getting much tighter. AI copyright and web disruption AI is also facing pressure on two other fronts: copyright and the future of the web. A federal judge has approved a $1.5 billion settlement in the lawsuit accusing Anthropic of using pirated books to train Claude. It is being described as the first major settlement of the current AI copyright wave, and potentially the largest copyright recovery on record. The case is especially notable because a judge had already suggested that training on copyrighted books may be fair use in some circumstances, while still ruling that obtaining them from pirate sites crossed a line. At the same time, Google’s search engine is moving deeper into AI-generated answers that keep users inside Google rather than sending them out to other websites. Publishers and online businesses say that shift is cutting traffic sharply, raising fears of a so-called Google Zero era where the open web gets less of the attention and revenue it has long depended on. Red Sea shipping tensions rise In the Middle East, Yemen’s Houthi rebels say they are imposing a blockade on Saudi Arabia by targeting Saudi-linked shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Even if only part of that threat materializes, it could rattle one of the world’s key trade routes. Roughly 12 percent of global trade passes through that narrow corridor linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. Cancer research moves forward In medical research, there were a couple of encouraging developments in cancer. Scientists at Umeå University reported that a fully human antibody stopped aggressive prostate cancer from growing and spreading in preclinical studies. That is early-stage work, so it is nowhere near routine care yet, but researchers say the approach could potentially offer a safer option with fewer side effects. Separately, Weill Cornell Medicine researchers made progress with patient-derived tumor organoids, tiny lab-grown versions of a patient’s cancer. In one study, those organoids closely matched the original tumors and even suggested that some patients who would normally be ruled out for a drug might still benefit. In another, lung tumor organoids were built in a way that preserved part of the immune environment, which could make them more useful for testing immunotherapies. The bigger idea is practical: better lab models could help doctors choose treatments more precisely. Mental health and STI warnings Two health stories also stood out today. Researchers say they have found the first strong genetic clues linked to borderline personality disorder in the largest study of its kind so far. By analyzing data from more than 12,000 people with the condition and over a million without it, the team identified multiple genome regions associated with BPD. The findings do not make the disorder simple or fully explained, but they do suggest biology plays a meaningful role and could push the field toward better research and, eventually, better care. Meanwhile, Europe’s disease prevention agency is warning that antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea is spreading more locally across several countries, including France, Germany, Sweden, and the UK. Officials say the infection remains a relatively low overall risk for the sexually active population, but the resistance trend is a clear warning sign because treatment options could narrow if it continues. Webb finds hidden giant planet And finally, a space story with a clever twist. Astronomers using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope have found a third giant planet orbiting the nearby star Beta Pictoris. What makes this discovery unusual is that the planet was not first spotted as a bright dot in an image. Instead, researchers detected its chemical fingerprint, especially signs involving carbon monoxide, and later backed that up with hints of water vapor and methane. The planet had stayed hidden inside a very dusty debris disk that makes ordinary imaging difficult. That matters because it suggests spectroscopy, essentially finding planets by the signatures in their light, could become a powerful way to uncover worlds that would otherwise stay invisible.
