Guest Host Sam Halligan & Co-Host Deacon Mark Campbell This week, Sam Halligan — Des Moines city director for Forge, a men's discipleship and small group organization — steps in as guest host alongside Deacon Mark Campbell. Bo Bonner returns to the studio June 29. Bo Bonner Calls In from London Bo Bonner joined the show by phone to share updates from a remarkable European journey. His stops included: * Rome — Participated in a Vatican Dicastery on Communication conference on artificial intelligence, timed to Pope Leo XIV's new AI encyclical. Bo and colleagues also recorded an episode of the Vatican Access podcast with Robert Duncan (Catholic News Service), available on YouTube. * France — Gave a presentation on John Henry Newman and Catholic universities to faculty at the Catholic University of the West, with live translation by colleague Luigi Rossi. * London — Currently in residence for his PhD program at Saint Mary's University, the only Catholic university in London. Bo's residential program begins in a few weeks. Bo's key takeaway from the AI encyclical discussions: "Before all else, Jesus Christ is victorious. The sure way forward in this time of a lot of questions is to rest in the heart of Jesus Christ." 📖 Learn more about the Catholic Cosmotechnics for an AI Age discussions and the Vatican Access podcast on YouTube. Watch the film For Greater Glory for an introduction to this heroic chapter of Catholic history, including the witness of 14-year-old Saint José Sánchez del Río. Gospel Reflection — Fr. Nick Smith Fr. Nick Smith, pastor of Saint Patrick's in Perry, reflects on Matthew's Gospel: Jesus's teaching to "turn the other cheek." Fr. Nick reminds us that this teaching only makes sense in light of eternity — God is perfectly merciful and just, and justice ultimately rests in His hands, not ours. Joe Stopulos Update Joe Stopulos, host of Man Up, shared that his father recently passed away from cancer — just 14 weeks after receiving his diagnosis. Today's episode of Man Up (9:00 AM, Iowa Catholic Radio Network) features Part 2 of a raw, personal interview with Dr. Bud Maher on Joe's childhood, his cradle Catholic upbringing, and his journey to deeper faith. Our prayers are with Joe and his family. Sam Halligan on Evangelization & Forge Sam shares his conversion moment — a Eucharistic adoration experience at a young adult Catholic conference in Nashville his sophomore year of college — and how that led to 10 years of full-time missionary work with Damascus before returning to Des Moines to lead Forge's men's small group network across the Diocese. Saint of the Day — Saint Marguerite d'Youville Born in Quebec in 1701, Saint Marguerite d'Youville endured profound suffering — the loss of her father, husband, and four of six children — before founding the Grey Nuns of Montreal in 1737. She is the patroness of widows and those in difficult marriages. The Grey Nuns were named after a mocking nickname referencing her husband's illegal liquor trading — a name the community reclaimed with grace. Fr. Thomas Kollasch: Life as a Newly Ordained Priest (+ more) | The Catholic Morning Show - 07/17/2026

Newly Ordained: Fr. Thomas Kollasch on His First Weeks as a Priest In an encore interview, Fr. Thomas Kollasch — a Bancroft, Iowa native and member of Divine Mercy Parish — talks about being ordained a priest for the Diocese of Sioux City on June 27, 2026, by Bishop John E. Keehner at the Cathedral of the Epiphany, becoming the second diocesan priest Bishop Keehner has ordained. He reflects on his six-year formation journey (Bishop Garrigan High School in Algona, two years at the University of Iowa, seminary in Winona, Minnesota, and studies at the Pontifical North American College in Rome), what surprised him most about celebrating his first Masses and hearing confessions, and practical ways listeners can support vocations, including praying for and backing university campus ministries. This Sunday's Gospel: The Wheat and the Weeds Deacon Mark Campbell joins in-studio with a reflection on Sunday's Gospel from Matthew — on God's patience in letting the wheat and the weeds grow together, and what that means for how we bring our own struggles and sins to Him. Fr. Nick Smith, pastor of St. Patrick's in Perry, also offers a reflection on Jesus and the Sabbath from Matthew's Gospel. Growing the Faith Tour Heads to Spencer, Creston & Pella Catholic apologist Karlo Broussard brings the Growing the Faith Tour to three Iowa parishes next week: * July 21 — Sacred Heart Parish, Spencer — "Religion: Why Should I Care?" * July 22 — Holy Spirit Parish, Creston — "Living Life to the Fullest: A Compass for Human Happiness" * July 23 — St. Mary's, Pella — "Salvation Unveiled: A Catholic Perspective in Dialogue with Protestants" Events are free, but pre-registration is requested. Seph Schlueter: From a Viral Worship Anthem to an "Audience of One" (+ more) | The Catholic Morning Show – 07/16/2026

A Breakout Catholic Voice Seph Schlueter has become one of the fastest-rising names in Christian music. His debut single "Counting My Blessings" topped multiple Billboard and Mediabase Christian radio charts, earned him the K-LOVE Fan Award for Breakout Single, and picked up multiple Dove Award nominations. In 2023 he signed with Provident Entertainment (Sony Music) in Nashville — all while continuing to serve as a Catholic missionary in Ohio. He shares a personal Iowa connection with guest host Sam Halligan: his father's parents were both born and raised in Dubuque, where they met. Formed as a Missionary Before the record deal, Schlueter spent years as a full-time missionary with Damascus, a Catholic missionary community based in Columbus, Ohio, where he also founded the worship collective Damascus Worship. He talks about how that season of formation shaped his understanding of what it means to give his life away for others — and what it looks like to live with God as his true "audience of one." Learn more about Damascus at damascus.net [https://www.damascus.net/?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show]. Catch Him Live: Bash at the Lake Schlueter will perform at Bash at the Lake, a free, family-friendly Christian music festival at Clear Lake City Park in Clear Lake, Iowa, on Saturday, August 15, 2026, starting around 12 PM. The lineup also includes Cochren & Co and RENEE. Canon Law Meets AI: What Church Law Says About Technology - Adam Storey | The Catholic Morning Show – 07/16/2026

A Monthly Conversation on Canon Law Adam Storey, who works in canon law and marriage ministry for the Diocese of Des Moines, joins host Bo Bonner for his regular monthly segment on how Church law intersects with everyday life — this time turning to a timely topic: technology and artificial intelligence. What Canon 212 Says About Communication Storey walks through Canon 212 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law, which addresses the rights and duties of the faithful to communicate honestly and respectfully. He highlights three guiding principles that apply just as much to artificial intelligence and social media as to any other form of communication: acting from genuine competence and knowledge, keeping the common good in view, and always respecting the dignity of the person. The Church's Teaching on "Instruments of Social Communication" The conversation also touches on Canons 822–832, the section of Church law addressing the "instruments of social communication" — guidance Storey says is meant not to restrict the faithful, but to order the Church's communication toward unity, truth, and the good of the community, under the guidance of the Church's pastors. Why It Matters Storey and Bonner discuss how these principles can help Catholics navigate disagreement and division — encouraging communication that builds up the Body of Christ rather than fostering contempt or discord. Adam Storey joins The Catholic Morning Show for a canon law conversation every month. Terry Herrman: Breaking the Cycle of Recidivism at Matthew 25 House (+ more) | The Catholic Morning Show - 07/15/2026

Answering the Call of Matthew 25 Terry Herrman, president of the Board of Directors for Matthew 25 House, joins the show to talk about the Ames, Iowa ministry that helps formerly incarcerated men "imagine and embrace a new way of living through Christ-centered relationships that build a sense of belonging and self-worth." Terry shares how a chance conversation with a deacon at his church pulled him onto the board, what a typical week of volunteering looks like (6 a.m. devotions Monday–Friday, Saturday Bible study, and church integration for residents), and the moment that means the most to him: watching the men graduate the year-long program — and stay in the community long after. Matthew 25 House: Helping Formerly Incarcerated Men Find New Life in Christ - Terry Herrman - 07/15/2026

The Mission Matthew 25 House is a Christian outreach ministry in Ames that helps men transitioning out of the Story County Jail, halfway houses, or Iowa prisons. Its goal: to help formerly incarcerated men imagine and embrace a new way of living through Christ-centered relationships that build belonging and self-worth, breaking the cycle of recidivism that pulls nearly 70% of released men back to jail. Terry's Story Terry Herman didn't set out to join the board — a deacon at his church asked him to fill in at a single board meeting, "and from that moment on, I was hooked." Unlike other board members, Terry had no personal connection to incarceration; it was the mission itself, and the other board members' devotion to it, that pulled him in. A Week in the Life of a Volunteer Residents gather for devotion time every morning at 6 a.m., Monday through Friday, plus a Saturday Bible study, and are encouraged to join a local church community. Volunteers help in all kinds of ways — mentorship, employment coaching, budgeting help, or simply spending time with the men, teaching by example what it looks like to give of yourself to others. The Moment That Matters Most For Terry, nothing beats watching a resident complete the year-long program and graduate — and then stay connected to the community long after, continuing in church, Bible study, and fellowship even after moving into a place of their own. Four Key Focuses * Provide a Christian Family Home-Life * Provide a Church and a Sense of Belonging * Provide a Spiritual and Faith-Based Lifestyle * Provide a Base Needed for Success How to Help Learn more, volunteer, or donate at Matthew 25 House [https://matthew25house.org/?utm_source=Iowa%20Catholic%20Radio&utm_medium=Podcast&utm_campaign=The%20Catholic%20Morning%20Show].
