Kuvaus

In 1856, a teenage girl named Nongqawuse returned from a riverbank near the Gxarha River with a prophecy: the ancestors would rise, drive the British into the sea, and restore the Xhosa kingdom. To make it happen, the Xhosa people must destroy their cattle and burn their grain. Over the next year, the prophecy spread like wildfire through the Eastern Cape. By early 1857, tens of thousands of cattle had been slaughtered, crops destroyed, and fields left fallow. The promised resurrection never came. Instead, famine swept the land. An estimated 40,000 Xhosa starved to death, and another 40,000 fled as refugees. The Xhosa lost their economic independence, their political autonomy, and much of their land to British colonial expansion. This episode explores the context of the Cattle Killing: the pressures of colonial encroachment, the recent lung sickness epidemic among cattle, the role of Nongqawuse and her uncle Mhlakaza, the divided responses among Xhosa chiefs like Sarhili and Phalo, and the aftermath that reshaped the Eastern Cape. Lucas and Luna discuss what drove an entire people to follow a prophecy of self-destruction, and how memory of the Cattle Killing continues to resonate in Xhosa oral tradition and South African history. #Xhosa #Nongqawuse #CattleKilling #EasternCape #SouthAfrica #ColonialHistory #Prophecy #Mhlakaza #Sarhili #BritishEmpire #Famine #OralTradition #AfricanHistory #1856 #1857 #LungSickness #KingWilliam'sTown #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo [https://buymeacoffee.com/fexingo]

1914 SANNC Delegation to Britain: Protesting the Land Act

In 1914, less than a year after the devastating Natives Land Act, the newly formed South African Native National Congress (SANNC) sent a delegation to London to petition the British government. This episode follows Sol Plaatje, Walter Rubusana, and Thomas Mapikela as they cross the Atlantic, navigate colonial bureaucracy, and confront the outbreak of World War I. Drawing from Plaatje's later book 'Native Life in South Africa', we explore how this early diplomatic mission shaped the ANC's international strategy and the long struggle for land rights. A story of hope, frustration, and the birth of transatlantic protest politics. #SolPlaatje #SANNC #NativesLandAct #1914 #SouthAfrica #BritishEmpire #WalterRubusana #ThomasMapikela #LondonProtest #WorldWarI #LandRights #ANC #EarlyResistance #Diplomacy #History #FexingoHistory #ColonialResistance #AfricanHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo [https://buymeacoffee.com/fexingo]

South Africa 1956 Women's March Against Pass Laws

On August 9, 1956, 20,000 women from all racial backgrounds marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest the extension of pass laws to women. Organized by the Federation of South African Women (FEDSAW), the protest was led by Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, and Sophia Williams. They delivered petitions to Prime Minister Strijdom's office, then stood in a silent half-hour before singing freedom songs, including the iconic 'Wathint' Abafazi Wathint' Imbokodo' (You Strike a Woman, You Strike a Rock). This episode explores the grassroots organizing, the diverse coalition of African, coloured, Indian, and white women, the government's response, and the lasting legacy that made August 9th South Africa's National Women's Day. We delve into the courage of ordinary women who defied apartheid's restrictions and turned a single protest into a symbol of feminist anti-apartheid resistance. #SouthAfrica #Apartheid #WomensMarch #1956 #LilianNgoyi #HelenJoseph #RahimaMoosa #SophieWilliams #FEDSAW #PassLaws #UnionBuildings #Pretoria #WathintAbafazi #Imbokodo #AntiApartheid #WomenResistance #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo [https://buymeacoffee.com/fexingo]

The 1948 Election That Brought Apartheid to Power

In 1948, South Africa held a general election that reshaped its future. Against expectations, D.F. Malan's National Party defeated Jan Smuts's United Party on a platform of apartheid. This episode unpacks the election itself: the fears of white voters, the role of the Afrikaner Broederbond, the Sauer and Fagan commissions, and how a narrow victory led to decades of institutionalised racial segregation. We trace the immediate aftermath—the Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act, the Population Registration Act, and the Group Areas Act—and the early resistance from the ANC and the Defiance Campaign. It's the story of how apartheid became law, one election at a time. #1948Election #Apartheid #DFMalan #JanSmuts #NationalParty #UnitedParty #AfrikanerBroederbond #SauerReport #FaganCommission #GroupAreasAct #PopulationRegistrationAct #SouthAfrica #History #FexingoHistory #PoliticalHistory #ElectionHistory #WhitePolitics #Segregation Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo [https://buymeacoffee.com/fexingo]

The Freedom Charter South Africa's Vision for a Non-Racial Future

In June 1955, thousands of South Africans of all races gathered in a dusty field in Kliptown, Johannesburg, to adopt a document that would become the moral compass of the anti-apartheid struggle: the Freedom Charter. This episode takes you inside the Congress of the People campaign — a grassroots effort by the ANC, the South African Indian Congress, the Coloured People's Congress, the Congress of Democrats, and the South African Congress of Trade Unions to draft a vision for a free, democratic South Africa. Lucas and Luna explore how the Charter was negotiated clause by clause by ordinary people, why its opening demand that 'The People Shall Govern' so threatened the apartheid state, and how it led directly to the 1956 Treason Trial. They also trace the Charter's lasting influence, from the armed struggle to the final democratic constitution of 1996. Featuring key figures like Z.K. Mahabane, Yusuf Dadoo, Nelson Mandela, and Helen Joseph, this episode reveals a moment when a movement found its voice — and a document that still resonates today. #FreedomCharter #CongressOfThePeople #Kliptown #ANC #SouthAfricanHistory #AntiApartheid #TreasonTrial #NelsonMandela #YusufDadoo #HelenJoseph #ZKMahabane #SACTU #ColouredPeoplesCongress #SouthAfricanIndianCongress #CongressOfDemocrats #1955 #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo [https://buymeacoffee.com/fexingo]

South Africa 1966: The Rise of John Vorster and Apartheid's Iron Fist

In 1966, South Africa saw the assassination of Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd and the rise of John Vorster, a former Nazi sympathizer who would intensify apartheid's security apparatus. This episode explores Vorster's background, his role as Minister of Justice under Verwoerd, and his expansion of the police state through laws like the Terrorism Act and the creation of the Bureau of State Security (BOSS). We discuss the tightening of repression against anti-apartheid movements, the impact on leaders like Nelson Mandela and Steve Biko, and how Vorster's policies set the stage for the turbulent 1970s. The conversation also touches on the internal divisions within the National Party and the international isolation that began to mount during his tenure. Join Lucas and Luna as they navigate this dark chapter in South African history. #JohnVorster #Apartheid #SouthAfrica #BOSS #TerrorismAct #NationalParty #Verwoerd #SecurityPolice #RobbenIsland #ANC #PAC #BlackConsciousness #SteveBiko #NelsonMandela #1966 #ApartheidHardening #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo [https://buymeacoffee.com/fexingo]
