Will Donald Trump Visit Doonbeg For The Irish Open?
The countdown is on to one of the biggest sporting events ever to come to West Clare. Around 70,000 spectators are expected to attend the Irish Open at Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg this September, and now US President Donald Trump has said he is thinking of travelling to Clare to attend the tournament and watch the world's top golfers, including Rory McIlroy. What could that mean for the local community in Doonbeg, for tourism, and for the village itself? To discuss it, Alan Morrissey was joined by Doonbeg Fianna Fáil Councillor, Rita McInerney, and Tommy Comerford, Doonbeg community activist. Photo (c) geralt via Pixabay, Donald Trump
Claims Clare Carers Struggling Financially Due To 'Six Years Of Broken Promises'
It's claimed carers in Clare are struggling financially as a result of 'six years of broken promises'. It comes as Family Carers Ireland found those in local authority housing in Clare pay €77.50 a week in rent, 58% more than Monaghan which was found to be the cheapest in the country. The Government committed to standardising the Differential Rent Scheme in the program for Government in 2020. Clare Aontú rep June Dillon says it's high time carers nationwide are treated fairly.
Bed Nights To Double At Clare Children's Respite Centre
Bed nights are set to be doubled at a Clare children's respite centre. As part of a €25m investment in respite services nationwide, the Hazeldine facility in Barefield will have capacity to provide 1,400 bed nights by the end of this year. Additionally, there will also be enhancements to services operated by Corlann in Miltown Malbay, Shannon and Kilrush. Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Cooney wants to see further investment in outreach services as well.
Hopes Planned Airport Security Measures Can Free Up Clare Gardaí
It's hoped newly planned security measures for Shannon Airport can free up Garda availability across Clare. The Clare base received €1.9m in funding earlier this year, with much of this due to go towards the construction of an Airfield Security Perimeter fence. There have been five alleged incursions by activists since March 2024 and the Airport is now also planning to install high security anti-ram barriers to prevent vehicles from entering. Cratloe Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat O'Gorman says the incidents have affected Garda resources in the past.
