Beyond The Campfire
Between 1764 and 1767, fear gripped the remote province of Gévaudan in southern France. A savage creature stalked the countryside, attacking villagers, children, and shepherds with a brutality that left entire communities in terror. Witnesses described a beast larger than any wolf, with fiery eyes, reddish fur, and a taste for human blood. By the time the killings stopped, more than one hundred people were believed to have been attacked. In this episode of Beyond the Campfire, Will and Steve descend into one of history’s most infamous monster cases. Was the Beast simply an unusually large wolf, a pack of trained animals, or something far more sinister? From royal hunting parties sent by Louis XV to whispers of werewolves and demonic creatures, the legend only grew darker with each new victim. Tonight, we follow the blood trail through the misty hills of France, where panic, folklore, and real death collided — and ask the question that still lingers centuries later: what was really hunting the people of Gévaudan?
