The Habit of Self-Justification

Self-justification the habit of excusing ourselves by appealing to our supposed overall goodness is not merely a weakness but a sin, because it denies God’s verdict that we are sinners by nature and replaces His truth with our own pretenses. The Bible teaches that our problem is not isolated wrong acts but a rebellious nature that hides behind masks and refuses honest judgment. The Christian, however, has no need to justify himself, because God has already justified him in Jesus Christ: accepting God’s charge against us, we abandon self-defense and rest wholly in Christ’s righteousness. When we make excuses, we live in the old Adam; when we confess our sin and trust Christ, we live in grace, knowing that our standing before God rests not on what we are or do, but on God’s free and continual forgiveness through the perfect obedience and atoning work of Christ.

A printer told me that 98 percent of students entering his trade drop out because printing demands an exactness and conscientiousness few young men now possess; every mistake is visible to the world, and the work requires patient correction of even the smallest errors. Other skilled trades report the same decline, and many now depend on foreign labor because apprentices refuse painstaking work. The roots of this problem lie deeper than training they lie in our deteriorating relationship to God. When a society becomes casual about its duties to God worship, obedience, tithing it invariably grows even more casual about its duties to men. Disrespect toward God breeds disrespect for all authority and responsibility, until life descends from “Thy will be done” to the anarchy of “My will be done.” If you grieve over such a world, begin its repair where all true reform begins: with yourself and your relationship to Almighty God.

What Do You Stand For?

A friend once read a woman a line from my book: “If we love that which is good, we will hate that which is evil.” The woman immediately rejected it, insisting, “I love everyone and hate nothing.” My friend quietly answered, “You don’t stand for anything, do you?” a perfect response. To hate nothing is to love nothing, because real love always hates whatever destroys the thing loved. I once dealt with a woman whose husband beat her, scarred her, committed adultery, and had begun to molest their daughter; yet she insisted, “I don’t hate him at all; I really love him.” Her refusal to hate evil ensured her continued destruction. Years later, her situation was even worse. This is the spirit of our age: people claim universal love, but stand for nothing, fight for nothing, and refuse to oppose evil. True love requires moral indignation; without hatred of evil, there is no real love of the good. And God’s verdict on such empty sentimentality will echo my friend’s words: “You don’t stand for anything, do you?”
