Faithfulness After the Victory

Stewardship: God allows us to be a part of His work and expects us to be stewards of what He has entrusted to us. We shouldn't just strive to win a victory, but also to maintain it. Faithfulness: Faithfulness is the greatest resource God has, and it's what He is looking for in His people. It's not about being talented, but being faithful to God in whatever area He has called us to. People Matter: Every family and heritage mentioned in Nehemiah 7 matters to God. People matter to God, and they should matter to us as we go forward to spread the Gospel.

Staying Focused in the Face of Opposition

The Attack of Distraction: Nehemiah's enemies repeatedly tried to lure him away from his work under the guise of meeting. The speaker warns that believers must be cautious of outside influences that try to pull them away from what God has called them to do. Like Nehemiah, Christians must recognize that their spiritual work is the priority and refuse to "come down." The Attack of Slander: The enemy used false reports to ruin Nehemiah's reputation and question his motives. The speaker notes that people will inevitably say negative things, particularly on social media, but Christians should not invest emotional energy into critics who do not matter in the grand scheme of life. The Attack of Fear and False Counsel: Enemies hired a false prophet to trick Nehemiah into hiding in the temple out of fear for his life. The speaker highlights how fear is a weapon that paralyzes ministry and causes people to compromise their convictions. Nehemiah's strong spiritual discernment—developed through a consistent walk with God—allowed him to recognize the deceit and refuse to flee.

Overcoming Distractions

1. The Distraction of Compromise (Nehemiah 6:1-4) The Invitation to Ono: Nehemiah’s chief political enemies—Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem—send a message inviting him to a meeting in one of the villages on the plain of Ono. The Hidden Agenda: Nehemiah immediately discerns their true intent, noting, "but they thought to do me mischief." The plain of Ono was a neutral, borderline territory; the enemies wanted to lure Nehemiah away from the safety of Jerusalem to kidnap or assassinate him. The Great Work Response: Nehemiah sends messengers back with a famous declaration of focus: "I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?" Persistence of the Enemy: The enemies send the exact same invitation four distinct times, trying to wear Nehemiah down through repetition, but he answers them with the same unwavering refusal each time.

The Gracious Invitation

The Universal Call to the Thirsty (Isaiah 55:1) An Urgent Cry: The chapter opens with the word "Ho!" (or "Come!"), which the speaker explains is an urgent, attention-grabbing command akin to a street herald shouting to a crowd. The Qualification: The only qualification required to receive God's gift is to be thirsty and to have no money. God explicitly addresses those who are spiritually bankrupt and exhausted. The Divine Paradox: God invites them to "buy wine and milk without money and without price." The speaker notes the beautiful gospel paradox here: salvation is completely free to us, yet it is highly valuable and satisfies the deepest longings of the human soul. 2. The Rebuke of Misplaced Labor (Isaiah 55:2-3) Chasing Emptiness: God asks the poignant question: "Why do you spend money for that which is not bread? and your labor for that which satisfieth not?" The speaker applies this to modern life, noting how people exhausting themselves chasing money, career, pleasure, or self-righteousness, only to remain spiritually empty. An Invitation to Listen: God commands His people to "hearken diligently" and incline their ears. Spiritual life begins with active, obedient listening to God's Word. The Everlasting Covenant: By listening, their souls will live, and God promises to make an everlasting covenant with them, specifically pointing back to the "sure mercies of David." 3. The Witness to the Nations (Isaiah 55:4-5) The Messianic Promise: The speaker explains that while this historically looked back to King David, it prophetically points forward to Jesus Christ, the ultimate King from David's line. Christ is given as a witness, a leader, and a commander to the people. Global Reach: Because of God's work through His servant, nations that Judah did not know would run to them. The blessing of Israel was always meant to overflow into a global gospel invitation for all mankind.

Restoring Integrity and Unity

The Famine and Economic Crisis The Jewish people are suffering from a severe famine and economic hardship while trying to rebuild the city. To survive, buy food, and pay the king's taxes, many families are forced to mortgage their lands, vineyards, and homes. The crisis becomes so dire that some families are forced to sell their children into servitude to survive. 2. Exploitation Within the Community The heart of the issue is that the wealthy nobles and rulers are lending money at high interest (usury) to their impoverished brothers. The speaker emphasizes that this internal exploitation is worse than external threats because it dishonors God and brings reproach among the heathen nations who are watching them. 3. Nehemiah’s Righteous Anger and Rebuke Upon hearing the outcry of the people, Nehemiah becomes very angry (burning within). He takes time to reflect ("consulted with myself") before confronting the nobles and rulers, showing a disciplined approach to anger. Nehemiah gathers a great assembly and openly rebukes the leaders, commanding them to stop charging interest and to restore the lands, homes, and money they took.
