Ik fietste net langs het Museumplein en zag een enorme poster voor een nieuwe tentoonstelling in het Rijksmuseum. Moest meteen aan ons vorige gesprek denken. Yeah, good! I just cycled past Museumplein and saw a huge poster for a new exhibition at the Rijksmuseum. Immediately made me think of our previous conversation. Maarten: Oh ja, over kunst en cultuur. Ben je van plan om te gaan? Oh yes, about art and culture. Are you planning to go? Lisa: Ja, ik denk het wel! Maar ik bedacht me dat het echt lang geleden is dat ik in het Rijksmuseum zelf was. Jij? Yes, I think so! But it just occurred to me that it's been a really long time since I was at the Rijksmuseum itself. You? Maarten: Ik was er vorig jaar nog met mijn klas. A true masterpiece, don't you think? Maarten: Zeker. En het is grappig, want voor die eeuw was het een heel levendig schilderij. De meeste groepsportretten waren toen heel statisch, iedereen netjes op een rijtje. Definitely. And it's funny, because for that century it was a very lively painting. Most group portraits back then were very static, everyone neatly in a row. Lisa: Oh, echt waar? Dat wist ik niet eens. Ik vind het soms wel een beetje overweldigend, het Rijks. Zoveel zalen, zoveel verschillende stijlen. Oh, really? I didn't even know that. I sometimes find it a bit overwhelming, the Rijks. So many halls, so many different styles. Maarten: Dat is waar. Het is heel anders dan bijvoorbeeld het Van Gogh Museum, waar je echt het verhaal van één kunstenaar volgt. That's true. It's very different from, for example, the Van Gogh Museum, where you really follow the story of one artist. Lisa: Ja precies! Daar volg je zijn hele ontwikkeling, zijn stijl die verandert. That's still weird. But something else... We're talking about those rich, famous paintings, but modern Dutch design is super minimalistic. Maarten: Hm, dat is een goede observatie. Hoe komt dat, denk jij als ontwerper? Hmm, that's a good observation. Why do you think that is, as a designer? Lisa: Nou, ik denk dat de invloed van De Stijl, met een kunstenaar als Mondriaan, enorm is geweest. 'Doe maar gewoon, dan doe je al gek genoeg'. Die mentaliteit zie je er echt in terug. Well, I think the influence of De Stijl, with an artist like Mondriaan, has been enormous. 'Just act normal, that's crazy enough'. You really see that mentality reflected in it. Maarten: Ja, de beroemde Nederlandse nuchterheid. Misschien heeft het ook wel te maken met het Calvinisme van vroeger. Soberheid was een belangrijke waarde. Yes, the famous Dutch sobriety. Maybe it also has to do with the Calvinism of the past. Austerity was an important value. Lisa: Oh ja, dat zou zomaar eens kunnen! Dat alles functioneel moet zijn, zonder onnodige versiering. Dat zie je toch nog steeds in veel design? Oh yes, that could very well be! That everything has to be functional, without unnecessary decoration. You still see that in a lot of design, don't you? Maarten: Eigenlijk wel. Dus we zijn van de extreem gedetailleerde meesterwerken naar minimalistische stoelen gegaan. Een behoorlijke verandering. Actually, yes. Maarten: Zeker. Je noemde net trouwens een paar interessante woorden. Wat is voor jou precies het verschil tussen de vaste 'collectie' en een 'tentoonstelling'? Certainly. You just mentioned a couple of interesting words, by the way. What exactly is the difference for you between the permanent 'collection' and an 'exhibition'? Lisa: Oh, goeie vraag. De collectie zijn alle kunstwerken die het museum zelf bezit, de permanente stukken zeg maar. Een tentoonstelling is tijdelijk, vaak rond een specifieke kunstenaar of een thema. Oh, good question. The collection consists of all the artworks the museum itself owns, the permanent pieces, so to speak. An exhibition is temporary, often centered around a specific artist or a theme. Maarten: Ah, ja precies. En je gebruikte het woord 'meesterwerk'. Dat vind ik eigenlijk een heel mooi woord. Wat maakt iets een meesterwerk voor jou? Ah, yes, exactly. Bij mij thuis wordt er eigenlijk nooit gefrituurd, juist vanwege de geur en de rommel. Ik hou het liever bij simpelere gerechten. That's true. Lisa: Over de Gouden Eeuw. Al die schilderijen en die prachtige huizen langs de grachten in Amsterdam. Wauw, wat een rijkdom was dat, hè? About the Golden Age. Ze hadden een monopolie op de handel in specerijen zoals peper, kruidnagel en nootmuskaat. Dat leverde ongelofelijk veel geld op. Yes, exactly. They had a monopoly on the trade in spices like pepper, cloves, and nutmeg. That generated an incredible amount of money. Lisa: Wat een avontuur moet dat zijn geweest. Maandenlang op zo'n schip.
