The World Between Us
The third season jumps five years into the future, transitioning the characters out of high school and into adulthood where they face severe, real-world consequences. Nate Jacobs, once a menacing and violent high school quarterback, has become a failed real estate developer engaged to Cassie Howard. His character arc shifts dramatically in this season, as he loses his terrifying edge and falls into a desperate struggle with mounting financial debts. In the penultimate episode, titled "Rain or Shine," Nate's financial troubles culminate in a gruesome and anxiety-inducing death. After having a toe and a finger severed by a loan shark named Naz, Nate is kidnapped and buried alive in a coffin at his failed construction site. Naz leaves Nate with only a small pipe for air and gives Cassie 72 hours to pay a $1 million ransom. In a horrific twist of fate, a rattlesnake slithers down the breathing pipe and delivers a fatal bite to Nate's neck before he can be rescued.Cassie and Maddy go to desperate lengths to secure the ransom money. Cassie sleeps with a television star to revive her deleted OnlyFans account and generate quick cash, while Maddy seeks financial help from a dangerous kingpin named Alamo. Alamo ultimately kills Naz during a tense standoff, but by the time the coffin is unearthed with a backhoe, Nate is already dead. As a result of these frantic efforts, Maddy is left heavily indebted to Alamo and his illicit enterprise.Concurrently, Rue Bennett operates as a DEA informant, attempting to dismantle the operations of drug lords Alamo and Laurie. Motivated by a desire to undo the harm she caused by bringing fentanyl into the country, Rue finds herself in grave danger. Suspected of treason at Laurie's compound, her hand is sliced, and she is locked in a bedroom while her captors casually discuss whether to kill or traffic her. In the dead of night, Rue and Faye attempt to rob a safe, but instead of cash, they discover the IDs of trafficked women. The episode ends on a massive cliffhanger as an enraged Faye screams to wake up their captors, leaving Rue's fate uncertain. These shocking events and Rue's omniscient narration have fueled widespread theories about the show's ultimate conclusion. Many viewers speculate that the entire series is actually Rue's future testimony as a federal informant, explaining her deep understanding of criminal networks and everyone's hidden motivations. Conversely, the escalating violence and the ominous presence of a notebook listing the dead have left others fearing that her story will end in tragedy.
