A Green Screen Between the Two Koreas

MASI, the Museum of Art of Italian-Speaking Switzerland in Lugano is hosting the exhibition K-NOW! Korea Video Art Today at the LAC. The exhibition offers a glimpse into South Korea’s contemporary art scene through eight video installations, featuring works that reflect the country’s history, evolution, and contradictions. From Nam June Paik—considered one its founders—onward, South Korean video art has been among the most dynamic and interesting globally. Among the artists featured in Lugano is Sojung Jun. Her Green Screen is a 12-minute-and-30-second work filmed along the DMZ, the demilitarized zone that has divided South Korea from North Korea since the 1953 armistice. What appears to be an “ecotopia” because nature has remained virtually untouched for over 70 years actually is one of the most heavily militarized areas on the planet. In Sojung Jun’s work, intended as an installation for a public setting, this discrepancy and the fragility of time and space are conveyed through glitches, distortions, interference, and subtle image distortions. I spoke with the artist on the sidelines of her talk with the curator Francesca Benini on April 22 at the LAC. K-Now!
