The Economic and Political episode: Latoya Benjamin talks black economics & running for office
Latoya Benjamin joins us on the couch to talk about all things politics and black economics. We start with economics and how certain practices affect our community on a whole as black people. Latoya talks about what got her so intrigued with understanding urban policy and economics. We discuss the state of the black economy before and after the pandemic. We talk about the idea of all Black wealth leaving the community and what we can do to change that. We talk about what it takes to build a grassroots campaign to run for office in your community. More specifically, how Latoya Benjamin ran for office and came in fourth place with no major funding outside of her community. Furthermore, talk about her journey in Africa and being stranded out there for 4 months after only thinking it was supposed to be a two-week trip. We talk about what happens when black people bank with major institutions and the racism that corresponds with it. ShotByOA: Hazard Lights⚠️; Drake & Soulja boy inspiring him 2 rap; I made songs wit Joey Badass
@ShotByOA sits down on the couch with us at the barbershop to talk all things music and life. we get into his platform Hazard Lights, his rap career and what's his biggest inspirations in music. We discuss Uber successful Hazard Lights YouTube channel. We discuss the origins on why and how it started. The pros and cons of what comes with the success of running a channel of this magnitude. We talk about how Drake and Soulja Boy were an early inspiration for him. As for Drake, it was his ability to sing and rap on the same song. It just blew his brains knowing that a person can do both. In his eyes, he's never seen anything like that before Drake. when it comes to Soulja Boy, it was a material value that gave some inspiration. More specifically, it was a completely iced out Lamborghini chain that was also a remote control toy car. Moreover, this foray into music led him into a chance meeting with a young up-and-coming rapper named @joeybadass . This relationship would have the 2 artists create music together. This was done during the Myspace days so, amazingly the 2 artists never met in person. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Chris Teel became an educator and non profit philanthropist despite having a felony under his belt
Chris Teel was an early childhood educator and a non-profit philanthropist. Running several initiatives, one being Movies In The Park. As a child growing up, Teel experienced what he calls the good kid, mad city syndrome many black kids live in urban cities. Having 2 uncles suffering from drug addiction in his home, it was no doubt very challenging at times. However, Teel had stronger influences in his life such as his grandfather who was the principal of his elementary school. Going to school everyday with his grandfather everyday kept close to his family and out of trouble, this, validating the good kid, mad city term. Teel managed to come out on top with a beautiful family, educating many black girls and boys, and engaging in numerous political and community agendas that helped all minorities reach their true potential.
